Army Corps dumps old bombs, charges town

SURF CITY, N.J. - The Army Corps of Engineers, which accidentally dumped sand filled with old military ordnance on Surf City's beach, now wants the town to help pay to remove it.

Local officials are angered by the suggestion that they should help foot the bill for a federal goof that already has cost the town an unknown amount of tourism business.

"If they're talking about getting any money out of Surf City to pay for their mistakes, they can forget about it," Mayor Leonard T. Connors told The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Army Corps spokesman Khaalid Walls said local governments are routinely asked to help pay for projects.

"That's protocol. All our projects are cost-shared," Walls said.

The town had to close its beach in March after World War I-era ordnance, including fuses and other military hardware, started surfacing in sand pumped ashore during a $71 million beach replenishment project.

6. Can you please list examples where
high tech gear that can be used on the ground in Iraq is going to other countries first.......

some of us are quite familiar with the gear we get in Iraq and now that we are the first ones to ever have recieved it.........

A list or some other proof would be nice.......

7. do you really think that Israel is NOT getting the highest tech,
like the next gen cluster bombs?
and as a result the house of saud will also get the best? And do you seriously think that they would accept getting something less than the best?

AND after the horror stories of personal armor, lack of bullets, and failure to build and supply personnel carriers with proper design and armort that we are the first to get the best? I say bullshit.

yes, we are getting robots. Yes, we are getting pilotless surveillance craft and more, but this is the BUsh admin we are talking about. ergo . . . .

I have always had Armor, on both tours in Iraq, I always had anything I needed, granted there are shortages in the supply system, but we get what we need.....

so again can you give a list of high tech weaponry Israel is getting that we in Iraq are not getting? Weaponry that we can use.........

4. I guess that's a good reason not to pump ocean bottom sand back
up to the beach. Actually, I see the Army Corps point. They wanted sand pumped and there it is. Then, the town added the requirement of "Clean Sand"
