The Pentagon has lost track of about 190,000 AK-47 assault rifles
and pistols given to Iraqi security forces in 2004 and 2005, according to a new government report, raising fears that some of those weapons have fallen into the hands of insurgents fighting U.S. forces in Iraq.

"They really have no idea where they are," said Rachel Stohl, a senior analyst at the Center for Defense Information who has studied small-arms trade and received Pentagon briefings on the issue. "It likely means that the United States is unintentionally providing weapons to bad actors."

3. this is astounding
but not as astounding as the plan to give weapons to the militias if they promise to fight the "right" people. Then they want us to be impressed when they find a cache of weapons?! My plan would have been to guard the borders and keep weapons out but, you know, this plan to make sure everyone has a weapon is almost as good. :sarcasm:

6. Excuse me, where do you people think there was an AK shortage in Iraq before?
AK's are the least of the US' problems. All the US probably managed to do was drive the price down on the black market for mint condition AK's a little.

8. One thing is for certain: the "good guys" didn't get them.
These weapons, like the tons of lost plastic explosives, are being used against our troops.

13. Like they care where they end up
As long as they are being used to kill the locals, or even our troops, they consider that a prime investment.

You know, since they are just handing them out to random people, maybe they can give me a few and a bunch of boxes of ammo. I'm sure I could put them to better use than the random insurgents they're giving them too

15. Bad actors?
We should only be so lucky that someone like Paris Hilton gets a hold of one of these. :eyes:

Let's give them to some good actors like Kevin Spacey or Susan Sarandon.

18. Worst case scenario...
They probably didn't leave the good ol' USA

Which leads me to these questions...with RFID, barcodes, and all this security of ordnance and weapons etc, the DoD can't keep track of them?

Or was this an inside job? Leading to what?

19. They didn't come from the USA, they came from eastern Europe.
There are very, very few actual AK-47's in the United States, and AFAIK no actual NFA Title 2/Class III restricted AK's are manufactured in this country whatsoever.
