...and calls for energy independence!

Gingrich calls War on Terror "Phony"

August 04, 2007 1:01 PM

ABC News' Joe Kildea Reports: Newt Gingrich, former Republican House Speaker, called the war on terror "phony" in a speech to a group of young conservatives in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.

The potential GOP presidential candidate told attendees of the National Conservative Student Conference that "We’re about to enter the seventh year of this phony war…and we’re losing."

Gingrich added, "None of you should believe we are winning this war. There is no evidence that we are winning this war."

Instead of the current strategy to fight terrorism, Gingrich said we should focus on energy independence. "We have to have a national energy strategy, which basically says to the Saudis, 'We’re not going to rely on you.'"

Gingrich also attacked the current administration and former Republican Congressional leadership in saying "We were in charge for six years…I don’t think you can look and say that was a great success."

5. hold on
you mean just some guy that happens to be named Newt Gingrich, rather than the former speaker of the house, right? Then again, how many f*cking people are named Newt Gingrich? I'm more than a little surprised. Somewhere Sean Hanitty is jumping off a cliff because his whole world has been shattered by his hero.

7. Hm, a little resentful are we Newt?
Seriously, why is he opening his big mouth?

He got what he wanted: the GOP running the entire show.

And he's complaining now???

9. hey newtie--Where were YOU when Cheney had the oil industry write our Energy bill?

Instead of the current strategy to fight terrorism, Gingrich said we should focus on energy independence. "We have to have a national energy strategy, which basically says to the Saudis, 'We’re not going to rely on you.'"

10. It's taken Newt nearly six years to realize the war on terror is phony.
I remember saying in the Fall of 2001, long before I joined the DU, that I had my doubts about the Global War on Terror (GWOT).

I thought that if "war" was used in the context of let's say "War" on Illiteracy then it could serve to bring more resources to issue of reducing terrorism.
I knew that if "war" meant primarily military campaigns to bring the end of terrorism that this would be both ineffective and impossible to implement.
Americans wouldn't accept the sending of troops to Northern Ireland the next time a pub explodes, fortunately they seem to be working toward a lasting peace, nor would they accept troops being deployed to Spain the next time ETA launches an attack.
Well at least not if they don't discover oil there.

No, it didn't take me long at all to realize the George Bush's war on terror was a phony. As it turned out it had more to do with Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL) than anything to do with fighting terror.

It is nice to see that Newt is farther along the learning curve than most Republicans but for most of us here at the DU the phony war on terror is a lesson learned long ago.

I'd like to fantasize that Newt must have been let back a few grades and it just takes him a while to catch up.

11. K&R
My first thought was that the icecaps melted too!

Wait, that's already happening.

Well what about the polarities?

Darn, that's happening too.

Hell having a cold snap?

After all of that, I had to wonder- did Newt get kicked out of the K Street ***holes club?

I think that's the real answer. He's out of their loop, so he's got a new boss with a new agenda.

12. Wonder what brought
that on, someone piss on his corn flakes, or did he snap that nobody believes the shit he has been spewing so he might as well try telling the truth for a change and see what happens?

13. Will Bush let him get a way with this . . . ?
Maybe . . . we'll see if Newt is irrelevant enough for Bush to just ignore him.

Meanwhile, obviously Newt doesn't like being out of the limelight --
and is struggling to gain some attention.

Or, maybe Newt wants to run as a Democrat -- ???

15. "The Phoney War" primarily means the first phase of WW2
when the fighting wasn't serious. I think it's entirely possible Gingrich means this - see http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1524041&mesg_id=1524102 .
