STOP the Presses! Gingrich says War on Terror is PHONY!
http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stories/2007/08/03/newt0803.html Wholy shit, I think hell just froze over! :wow:

Washington — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Thursday the Bush administration is waging a "phony war" on terrorism, warning that the country is losing ground against the kind of Islamic radicals who attacked the country on Sept. 11, 2001.

"None of you should believe we are winning this war. There is no evidence that we are winning this war," the ex-Georgian told a group of about 300 students attending a conference for collegiate conservatives.

"We were in charge for six years," he said, referring to the period between 2001 and early 2007, when the GOP controlled the White House and both houses of Congress. "I don't think you can look and say that was a great success."

"We've been engaged in a phony war," said Gingrich. "The only people who have been taking this seriously are the combat military."

We're about to enter the seventh year of this phony war against ... , and we're losing."

Then he get's to the real salient point, which is we have been letting the Saudis butt-fuck us for the last 40 years.

A more effective approach, said Gingrich, would begin with a national energy strategy aimed at weaning the country from its reliance on imported oil and some of the regimes that petro-dollars support.

"First of all, we have to have a national energy strategy, which basically says to the Saudis, 'We're not going to rely on you,' " he said.

3. He wants to be the saviour of the GOP, knowing most people on both sides are fed up with Bush.

6. Well, you know he's actually an extremely intelligent man.
I've never liked anything about him before. But he's smart enough to see what is going on- maybe he's honest enough to say it, too.

8. One of the engineers of the Repug Contract On America?
Yeah, he's smart. But completely without anything resembling a conscience. If he's saying this stuff out loud, something is definitely up.

15. My thoughts exactly, as they say, a leopard doesn't change its spots
and we all know what Gingrich is. However, that said, I really think what he said is good and wish the Dems would use the same in your face comments on attacking this phony war on terror.

16. True, that.
I think the time for subtlety and diplomacy in this is LONG past.

7. Newt will say anything to get attention.
How brave of him to admit that the past 6 years of GOP domination were a failure. Guess we're supposed to conclude that things would have been much better if we hadn't been deprived of Newt's brilliance when he was forced to resign in January 1999.

9. at least he's not a neo-con
What does "neo-conservative" really mean anyway?

It supposedly means former liberals that became conservatives.

But I don't remember any of them ever being liberals.

10. Still, it is nice to watch the cracks in the foundation of GOP unity
Not so long ago such a statement would have been political suicide.

The neocons are now officially open game. It's too bad their 15 minutes of fame lasted 6 years.

12. Before you get too excited, consider the history of the term "phony war"
In Britain, at least, it's primarily used to refer to the period between the start of WW2 (in terms of the declaration of war between Britain and Germany), and when Germany started invading Western European countries, when many people felt the war wasn't serious, or wasn't being taken seriously enough. See, for instance

“The Phoney War” October 1939 - April 1940

After the initial terror of the Polish campaign, everyone expected heavy combat, like the summer of 1914. The British Expeditionary Force landed in France, British children were sent to Canada or the countryside; At various times, neutral Belgium and Holland braced for invasion.

The heavy combat in France did not immediately materialize. Instead, the warring nations settled into a lull in fighting. The British press dubbed it the “sitzkrieg” — the expected terror of Total War had not yet emerged. Overlooked was the hot war in the Atlantic. British merchantmen were fighting for their lives to keep Britain supplied with resources.
...
The Phoney War did lull many French and British citizens into a false sense of complacency, thinking the Germans would not prove to have the mettle to invade the vaunted Maginot Line.

Also, the weather in the Winter of 1939 precluded blitzkrieg. In April 1940, the Allies and Germany came to blows over Norway. On May 10, 1940, the “Phoney War” came to a swift and terrible end with the invasion of France and the low countries. The Germans went around the Maginot Line, counting on its garrison to remain in place. The Phoney War was over; Total War had arrived.

Given Gingrich's comment "The only people who have been taking this seriously are the combat military", I fear he actually means he wants more war.

Newt's not QUITE smart enough to realize you can't fight an enemy without a state with an army.

on edit: He may be smart, but he's a Repug through and through. In some ways, even the smartest of them can be damned stupid.
