I'm a Democrat and I am PROUD!
I have grown weary of all the drive-by Threads where the Democrats are being trashed as if it were straight out of Fox News Entertainment.

The freepers have triumphed at DU.

I know many feel the strain as I.

I understand why so many have sought out other Boards. I rarely stay on DU beyond 30 minutes max......maybe the DU Rules need to be less just and more goal oriented. I don't know the answer really, but I do grieve for days of past....Where like minds actually processed Democratic issues verses oneliner slander threads.

1. If you can't recognize the problem
are you sure you can be a part of a real solution? Why does this outlaw president have any support at all among elected democrats? Problems cannot be solved without knowing where problems lie.

5. The majority of our party stood up and voted against the republican bill
In many ways, they were undermined by the leadership. That doesn't eviscerate those resisting Democrats' intentions or actions in voting against the bill. They deserve support for their stance.

Let’s see… 208 members of the Democratic Party in Congress voted to uphold liberty and democracy in America, and 57 members of said party voted against that majority of Democrats. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to just disown them all, condemn the entire bunch of them; right?!? THEY are ALL just fucking traitors. Right?

Oh, and you know what? 229 members of the Republican Party in Congress voted to take away liberty and democracy, but hey, 2 members of that same party voted to uphold liberty and democracy against the majority of that party. Why don’t we, likewise, applaud that entire party as the new defenders of freedom and democracy? THEY are ALL freakin' patriots. Right?

Hey, if it works one way, it oughtta work in reverse, too.

END /:sarcasm:

I’m disgusted. And no, this isn't aimed at anyone in particular. I'm just disgusted in general.

ETA: And no, I'm not disgusted with our party, our Democrats in Congress. I'm disgusted with the blanket condemnation being issued by so many everywhere I go. In forums, on the radio, on TV... the Democrats are being blamed for this when it was the fucking Rethuglicans who did this, with the help of a small minority of Democrats who voted with them.

Doesn't matter what the majority of our party does, it seems. The Democrats are damned if they do, and damned if they don't. We applaud our party for being the "big tent" party, for being diverse. We've seen the Rethuglicans voting in lock-step, and have decried such tactics, yet we damn our own when they DON'T do exactly that.

We are eating our own here. :(

Everyone is taking this as either we get our way or we will go home. It's like they forget that government is not black or white, either or yet they are doing exactly like the people they complain about, we want what we want and we want it now. Funny how republicans can spend 15 years screwing things up. Yet thats ignored and democratics are expected to "fix" everything thats screwed up in a few short months. Sure we all would like to see the democrats throw their weight around, but reality is we don't hold a veto proof majority. We do not have the option to shut down the government any longer, to many elderly and poor would suffer. Republicans on the other hand don't give a rats ass about the poor or the elderly so shutting down the government isn't a big deal to them. So flame away who cares? opinions are like assholes everyone has one.

Many here want that instant gratification....that McDonald's drive-thru window service and they want it NOW!

I really miss the days of healthy discussion with the pros's and cons of the issue threads. We still have a few now and then but they are so frequently high jacked by trash talk or my favorite...a HUGE PICTURE or long copy/paste article which destroys the convenient access to the threat...which is again, disruption of the discussion for the purpose of sabotage.

See post # 26 by Rodeodance as an example of copy/paste skills in a thread to high jack the theme of the post.

14. Does it fool okay to not have any 4th Amendment rights?
Because that "anti-Democratic" contingent just lost the rights that our relatives have died for for centuries. We have lost one of the greatest AMerican legacies, and it happened with thunderous appluse and the signatures of our own party on it. The leadership had our version of the vote need a 2/3 majority while the pukes only needed a majority...and we set the rules!

I'm glad it was more painless to some of you then the rest of us, but honestly...after this weekend, how can anyone say they are a "proud Democrat" after a knife was slipped between your ribs? How can they stand in this forum and cajole the others whose rights bleed from their open wounds...wounds largely inflicted by Democrats.

Or is the Constitution just a political football to be kicked around and many of us who are truly mad about this are crying over nothing but spilled milk?

While there's lots of legitimate Democrats on DU who offer constructive criticism, and who are rightfully angry when the Democrats do something stupid, there's at least an equal amount of pretend-Democrats who concern troll the boards. Then the concern trolls, aided by the gullible, will praise and "ditto" each other's concern posts.

20. I'm a Democrat and I'm proud of our grassroots
and the way they work hard to get Dems elected, raise money, get out the vote. I'm also proud that they are smart enough to follow the issues, understand what's going on in Congress and, unlike GOP followers, don't accept everything their party leaders do at face value.

I'm also proud of the great progress grassroots Dems have made in revitalizing the party, encouraging it to speak out on the issues, fight Bush and the GOP and do a better job of reaching out and regaining the voters it lost over the years.

I'm also proud of the exemplary work that grassroots Dems have done in shining a light on election theft and vote rigging, particularly in educating our leaders about the ways the GOP has used electronic voting and "caging". The entire initiative came directly from grassroots Dems, who had a difficult, uphill job in educating Dem leaders about the problems and how to avoid them.

I'm glad I belong to a party where members are allowed to dissent and make their voices heard. Its the only party major party in the US where it can be done.

The thing that makes the Democratic Party great is that it can still operate as a "bottom up" organization - one where those on the front lines still pay enough attention to issues and utilize every opportunity to educate those at the top, demanding only the best from our Party as a whole.

We have a lot of work ahead of us and it won't get accomplished if Dem leaders tell everyone to just shut up and donate. Our party is a success because its leaders have the capacity to listen, learn and respond to those it represents. That should never stop.

I could not find anything specific that Reid has done so far:

CONTACT SPEAKER PELOSI: http://www.speaker.gov /

………..Bush had secretly authorized warrantless wiretapping after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The administration agreed in January to obtain warrants from a FISA court and pressed Congress to change the law.

In a letter to the House Judiciary Committee, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said "many provisions of this legislation are unacceptable." The speaker, who voted against the bill, asked the committee to draft a new bill "as soon as possible after Congress reconvenes."

The law expires in six months, but Pelosi said she did not think "the American people will want to wait that long before corrective action is taken." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also promised to revisit the law, which has provoked widespread outrage from civil liberties groups who said it would impinge on Americans' privacy.

"A campaign of fear and misinformation has spread on Capitol Hill that needs to be stopped," said Anthony Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union, which opposed the new law.

Bush Not Satisfied - Demands Further Capitulation

From His Signing Statement:

While I appreciate the leadership it took to pass this bill, we must remember that our work is not done. This bill is a temporary, narrowly focused statute to deal with the most immediate shortcomings in the law.

When Congress returns in September the Intelligence committees and leaders in both parties will need to complete work on the comprehensive reforms requested by Director McConnell, including the important issue of providing meaningful liability protection to those who are alleged to have assisted our Nation following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

ACLU Condemns Senate for Passing Spy Law Changes (8/4/2007)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: media@dcaclu.org

WASHINGTON – The American Civil Liberties Union today condemned the House and Senate for bowing to pressure from the Bush administration and rushing to amend the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The administration lobbied heavily to alter the legislation before Congress recessed. The White House pushed for sweeping changes to the spy law after a FISA court judge recently rejected its use of wide-scale, untargeted surveillance. The bill was passed in the Senate by a vote of 60 to 28, and the House is poised to take up the same legislation late tonight.

“We are deeply disappointed that the president’s tactics of fearmongering have once again forced Congress into submission,” said Anthony Romero, executive director of the ACLU. “That a Democratically-controlled Senate would be strong-armed by the Bush administration is astonishing. This Congress may prove to be as spineless in standing up to the Bush Administration as the one that enacted the Patriot Act or the Military Commissions Act.”

The legislation that passed would allow for the intelligence agencies to intercept – without a court order – the calls and emails of Americans who are communicating with people abroad, and puts authority for doing so in the hands of the attorney general. No protections exist for Americans whose calls or emails are vacuumed up, leaving it to the executive branch to collect, sort, and use this information as it sees fit.

“It seems that political cover is more important to our senators than the rights and privacy of those they represent,” added Caroline Fredrickson, director of the ACLU Washington Legislative Office. “The administration is on the verge of reviving a warrantless wiretapping program even broader than the illegal one it conducted before. Though lawmakers claim these changes are temporary, we’ve just witnessed their lack of backbone today and, unfortunately, may soon see it again. Luckily, the sunset expires in the midst of primary season – so the voters will be able to keep lawmakers at their word.”

Goal oriented, there's a thought. Thanks for your post, I'm still a Democrat even when some in the party piss me off.

42. The non-Democrats here pretend that being a Democrat is incompatible with...
... wanting to *change* to *improve* the party. They mendaciously maintain that being a Democrat means standing pat.

48. I'm proud to be a dem
I'm not proud of our representatives right now. I haven't been since the war funding bill, but I kept an open mind and let this play out.

No more.

No more marginalized left. You've taken our votes for granted, knowing that we won't vote republican.

No more calls for patience. We don't have much left for them to take from us, other than our lives.

No more apologies. They work for us, and if they don't, we don't have a functional gov't, and we need to change the rules.

No more knives in the back in the name of being "tough on terror." Giving * free reign is NOT tough on terror.

Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me with facts that my view of the situation is incorrect.

The time for forgiveness is over. These are our lives, our world at stake.

52. It may end up in my journal
I had a good idea yesterday about how some people were taking Bush seriously as a threat, and others were content to believe this will all be over 2009.

When more information came out about the FISA thing, it became clear that we had a bigger problem. we seem to have people in our party that are ok with what Bush wants, and that scares me. It scares me even more that procedure was not used to block it.

A sad state of affairs.

54. most of my affiliation with the party has been in opposition to republicans
The Democratic party remains the most effective vehicle available to elevate our concerns into action or law. I'm always proud of my association with our coalition of interests against Bush and his republicans; those of which choose to organize under the Democrats' banner.

they have a perfect right to post these comments of course. Just starts to seem childish after a while, all the namecalling.

But I wouldn't call them freepers.

What some of them are is our version of a freeper. A lefty freeper if you will.

I too am a proud Democrat. Says it right on my bumper sticker.

And I didn't get these folks elected with any illusions as to what they'd be able to do with the barest of majorities. We elected to many blue dogs for that.

And I also didn't help get them elected in 2006 only to shout "vote the bums out!" in 2008. I'm cool with electing different Dems if people think it can be done, but if we end up with a Republican majority again, I will NOT be happy.

Recommended.

59. I would call them incompetent and poor leaders
they've proven that time and time again. I no longer have any faith in their ability to lead our party in Congress and plan to keep the pressure on for them to be replaced as leaders.
