We lost a battle...but not the war
I remember during the 2004 elections when the swift boat jerks were hitting Kerry pretty hard. Talking heads like Tweety was parroting their bullshit. A lot of us here at DU pulled together and did a massive email hit on him and he wound up apologizing over it. It was great. A lot of us were further engergized by it and we continued to do our damndest to fight back the RW lying talking points at every chance.

One of the things that I loved about DU when I first got here were the huge numbers of experienced activists that knew how to get the job done. They encouraged and advised folks like me on how to go about being more active which was great.

A lot of them have been at this for a long time. Many DUer's were veterans of the Vietnam era protests and many still continue to fight to this day. I can imagine there were plenty of times they tired and were ready to quit. At times I still feel like that today, but I look at those protesters who went before us and fought the good fight and I'm inspired.

Threads like this one:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x1525185#1525185

and this one:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1525513&mesg_id=1525513

are calls to action. As DUer's we should be lifting each other up, getting to work and fighting for those things that are important. It's okay to get discouraged and upset.

If you think today is bad, you should've seen this place post GE 2004. A lot were ready to throw the towel in and some may have, but a lot of us kept on going because what we do has meaning...if not for someone else, then for ourselves.

I do know this:

If I sit on my ass and do nothing while bush and his repuke pals run roughshod over this country then I won't be able to look in the mirror. I have to know in my heart of hearts that I did everything I could to help put the US back on the right track. I cannot in good conscience sit by and do nothing.

The way I see it...we've got two choices. Either curl up, suck our thumbs and do nothing...or stand up, brush ourselves off and continue the fight.

We lost a battle, folks...but the war is still waging.

2. In those days, we had a free and
independent press. We face now, a severely damaged constitution.

5. I think we've got a better shot at killing this than we do impeachment, IMO..
As much as I want impeachment, that's the one thing I don't think will happen. Either way, I'm sticking to fighting bushco and his cohorts. I want my country back.

6. Hear! Hear! No whining! No excuses! Just get out there and...
keep fighting.

Understand that the war will never really be won, but each day might bring us just a little bit closer, and each battle we win will make it all worthwhile.

8. If this were WWII and we were the Soviets, we'd have retreated to Kazakhstan by now
It's not simply a matter of one battle lost. They have been piling up for 6 years now and frankly it speaks poorly of party leadership that they are unable to quit folding like a paper-plate full of beans.

11. So by not being supportive of the dumbfucks that continually give up, I'm giving up?
Edited on Mon Aug-06-07 12:13 PM by JVS
Interesting.

Our party "leaders" suck, and it's no secret.

13. Those dumbfucks are the ones we've got to put the screws to...
let them know they fucked up and keep at it. I'm not saying go out cheerlead them. If you're pissed, let 'em know it. Call 'em. Write 'em. Whatever. Tell them you're pissed and why.

16. And they can't be purged until the next election...
meanwhile there is a six month sunset on this and it's possible to put enough pressure on them to get it killed when it expires. Waiting around for a purge that may or may not happen is pretty undesirable, IMO. I'm not that patient to see if we'll get other polititians that might or might not see it our way.

19. The next election cycle is already starting up, so they deserve the bashing they get and hopefully..
they'll lose their primaries and go home to drink themselves to death. What you might consider bashing of democrats is what their potential challengers view as necessary politics.

20. And the next election isn't until Nov. 2008...
between now and then a lot of work can be done. The law sunsets well before that, but if you decide not to do anything...your choice.

12. Who the eff is giving up?
The only giving up I'm going to do is to work to sacrifice some worthless legislators on the altar of democracy. People like that are not worth supporting in letters, donations, or time.

I'm just objecting strenously to the "Oh, pipe down; the poor babies were forced to do it" capitulating wing of the Democratic Party.

Unfortunately, this is a little different than the Necons committing election fraud in 2004.

This is the Democratic leadership doing to themselves--this is a sizable Democratic majority in the house saying FUCK YOU!, FUCK THE CONSTITUTION! AND FUCK THE IDEA OF ALLOWING THIS PISSY PANTS ASS HOLE ACCOUNTABLE FOR ANYTHING!
