Dear Representative Inslee,
Recently I received an update from your office which states that you are sponsoring a resolution to "Pursue Impeachment of the Attorney General". In this update you state, "Mounting evidence produced in testimony before House and Senate Judiciary Committees, has led me to believe that the Attorney General has besmirched his oath of office and that this Congress needs to initiate an impeachment investigation."
Pretty serious criticism there, Representative: "besmirched his oath of office". Let me just state that I am so pleased I am represented by a man who can recognize serious malfeasance when he sees it. There is no doubt in my mind that you are capable of such recognition, and not just in the case of Attorney General Gonzales.
And that is why I recognize your introduction of this bill (H. Res. 589) for what it is: a melodramatic act of grandstanding to please those pesky liberal, anti-war, anti-Bush constituents back home. It is nothing more than a ruse to convince the naive masses that you are a stalwart in upholding and defending the Constitution and bringing accountability for criminal behavior in high offices
Let's get real here, Representative. As culpable as Attorney General Gonzales is for committing "high crimes and misdemeanors" which require at a very minimum his removal from office, there are two higher ranking individuals in this administration who have committed much more serious "high crimes and misdemeanors". Clearly, the high crimes and misdemeanors of President Bush and Vice-president Cheney make those of Attorney General Gonzales look like the equivalent of jay walking. Let's not also forget that Mr. Gonzales never could have behaved so badly in office were it not for the acquiescence and prompting of his superiors, the President and Vice-President.
What is your position on pursuing impeachment of the president and vice-president? Well, let's take a look at the record.
A few months ago Rep. Kucinich introduced into the House of Representatives H.Res. 333 which calls for the impeachment of Vice-president Cheney. Currently, this bill has 18 co-sponsors. You are not one of them. Why not? Rep. Kucinich has obviously taken the right approach in going after the Vice-president (Vice, as Maureen Dowd refers to him) first. There is little doubt that Cheney has been the driving force behind the worst crimes of the Bush administration.
I want to know why you do not feel it appropriate to sign onto this measure, considering how arrogantly, how criminally, and how totally bereft of decency, this Vice-president has performed.
