and who might be perplexed about the Barry Bonds question. Olbermann has, I'm quite sure, many more fans from his many years as a sportscaster/commentator than from his days on "Countdown" -- and there were probably quite a few at Soldier Field tonight. With Dan Patrick, KO created a form of sports commentary on ESPN that is still the gold standard today. Aaron Sorkin made a highly-regarded sitcom about the two guys on SportsCenter, called SportsNight.

KO is a renowned collector of historic baseball cards; he wrote his first book about baseball as a child, and was doing sports broadcasting while still in school. He loves sports.

The question was a personal touch.

ON EDIT: I'm sure there are sports fans here who know more about KO's career in sports than I do. If so, please add comments.

9. But the QUESTION is: why did he pose the sports question to the black man?
Why not ask Richardson, who actually fabricated a career in baseball?

I think it was quite subliminal: the engine driving the Bonds hating is race. He is an uppity black man who didn't kow-tow to the media. Even Keith, whom I generally love, seems to have fallen victim.

It AINT'T like Barry Bonds is the ONLY player in sports possibly using performance enhancing drugs.

16. Which one of those guys was in the Negro Leagues again?
Barry Bonds isn't the only athlete using steroids, of course (otherwise known as CHEATING), but which one of those steroidal baseball players is breaking a beloved renowned? And as far as him "possibly" using performance enhancing drugs is concerned, I also possibly have a bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

The "Barry Bonds" uproar isn't about race at all, it's about our national love for the game of baseball, and about our ideas of tradition and fair play.

Who's record's getting broken again? Hank Aaron's? What race was he again? Wasn't that the guy who played in the Negro League? The guy who was called, "more than just a slugger: he was a real American hero who broke down racial barriers to pursue his dream?"

And as far as kow-towing is concerned: there is a difference between being a class act like Hank Aaron, and just being a jerk like Barry Bonds.

(sorry to get off the KO topic, btw)

Along with my classmate, Ann Coulter.

(Perhaps they cancel out somehow.)

4. It might have been personal, but it was 'HOT'! It's the question of the day,
and KO knows it. Hell, there are current stories out there about how the dim one might respond should BB make it, because he said nothing when steroids were brought up with his team that failed.

12. It was a brilliant test of character and judgment.....
Bonds is ethically challenged, and it ain't just about the 'roids.

8. I thought it was funny.
Good old Keith, can't resist asking at least one baseball question.

Now if the whole NIGHT had been baseball questions...

"Senator Clinton, would you compare the Bush Administration to the 1899 Cleveland Spiders in terms of how much it's been able to accomplish for the good of the country?"

13. That was the type of question
in a political debate that you step in doo doo regardless of how you answer. I have never noticed it before but suspect maybe Keith is not very fond of Obama. Having said this I thought Obama handled it well. For Keith to follow this question with a question about Katrina really spoke to how silly the Bond's question was.

14. He was actually supportive of him on his Pakistan statements --
said he had a plan, Bush didn't have a clue. He's been pretty generous with all the Dems, I think. (Obama did handle the question very well.)

15. Sorry, but I was offended
That question had no place in the debate. What do you think the media will focus on tomorrow?

By now, everyone knows about the trumped up media issue of whether Obama is "Black" enough. What better way to put Obama on the spot than to try to force him to comment on a controversial, yet unimportant issue concerning a "hated" black sports figure? Then KO had the nerve to follow up and imply that Obama's answer was incomplete. Yet, he never muttered a word when Biden rudely changed the subject on the Saigo Mine widow.
