I now hold a public office.

Last night I was elected "Secretary" of our little village's "Welfare Club," and I have a term limit of 3 years to life, depending on who can be tapped to take it next. Any way the Welfare Club is the local equivalent of the city council and the structure of the community organization has its roots way back in time to when the area ran on a communal system. I love how extremely democratic it is in practice, although many locals would identify as Rs. Our little village has a population of 103 souls and is dying out as its young move away and the elders pass on. Of those 103 people, about a dozen can be counted on to show up at the monthly meetings. The office isn't tied to political party, nor does it need to be. As much as I love this little village, it does need to be connected a bit to the world beyond before it dies out. I've already been able to make some suggestions at monthly meetings which have helped the village to expand their reach a little. The village will never be larger or move industry in or anything so 21st century. That decision was made years ago and that is fine with me. I just don't want to see it die out because these people keep close to the land and love it. They are good stewards of the land and environment and have made many lasting commitments years before it became an issue to preserve the land.

Every office is important whether political or not. We need to be the change we seek.

I'll say that once holding office gets in your blood, it never goes away. May you be secretary for a long time!
