Perhaps we have hit that proverbial "wall".

Where do we start to tackle all these problems we have?

We have unreliable sketchy elections
We have unreliable sketchy polititions, no matter HOW we (s)elect them
We have tumble-down schools all over the place
We have tumble-down bridges, overpasses & highways everywhere

Our worldwide reputation has never been worse
Tens of millions of us have no affordable access to medical care
Millions more have medical insurance, but are one paycheck away from losing it

Our media chooses to focus on fluff and denies us necessary knowledge
Our children have minimal access to the education they need, to stay above the poverty line
Millions of old people have to choose between food & shelter or medicine & doctors
Our military is breaking under the strain of misuse and overuse

Most people have no savings
Many people have no hope
All of us are dissatisfied. most of the time

Our food supply is threatened
Our water supply is likely tainted with many chemicals
Our protecting wetlands are being destroyed

Certain groups of people have been granted scapegoathood:
..........1. Hispanics
..........2. Gays
..........3. Fat people
..........4. Smokers
..........6. Stay-at-home Moms
..........7. Work-outside-the-home Moms
..........8. Boomers
..........9. Old people on Social Security
........10. Single Moms
........11. Middle Easterners & South Asians
and many more...

It seems that the only group of people who are "okeedokee" are the college-educated "men in suits"..white men in suits.. white men in suits, with MONEY.

The rest of us seem to have about every problem known , with the possible exception of scurvy or beriberi..

What politician would even WANT to try and take on all these problems? He/she would certainly have to know that no matter what they do, 50% of the people will hate their guts for even trying to change things, and the other 50% will hate their guts for not doing more..

I'm glad I decided at the last minute..to NOT run for president:)

3. Sorry you've ruled out running
Looks like I'll have to stick to Wetzelbill/Kurovski, even though I'm not getting any of the goodies I was promised when I signed on to their campaign.

8. Now that's how it's done!
W/K '08 gave me a pizza pocket with dust on it. It was still warm, but I'm convinced they dropped it on the floor before they gave it to me.

5. The powers that be will choose a democrat to win the Whitehouse
in 08 and as soon as the new democratic president take office the economy will collapse and they will blame it all on the newly elected Democratic President while Bush and the Republican congress are exonerated. In other words the dems are being setup. I guess I'll go don tin foil hat now..

6. I have an idea. Instead of running government like a business, maybe
we should start running government as a public entity run by public servants for the public interest/

14. Based on what I've seen so far, don't get your hopes up.
Any sense of real optimism about politics, is long gone..

Altruism is seriously lacking these days, and I really don't understand why.. It's truly trooubling to see how many people lack any compassion, and even less wisdom:(

15. What you've left out...
Nowhere do you mention poor folk. We don't seem to get noticed much.

So far, we poor folk haven't done much of anything to interrrupt your lives.

But, if history is any gauge, sooner or later, we're all going to get really tired of being scapegoats, and throw us a little fit here and there. Those kinds of rebellions never go smoothly, and could easily be one more nasty factor in things grinding to a halt.

It won't be pretty.

16. Oops. you're right.. But then poor folks often inhabit all the other groups too
There are more of us poor and nearly poor than any other group, so mabye eventually they will be forced to listen.. here's hoping

You wouldn't believe how many people get so upset when it's pointed out to them.

BUT... if you really look around at DU and political groups, you don't see us mentioned too much.

We're so invisible and easily dismissed.

It doesn't matter that we "inhabit other groups".... Dr. King knew there were poor people who were black, and he was fighting for civil rights, but that didn't mean that he ignored poor folk---he planned the Poor Peoples' March.

It's important that we no longer be invisible.

And, yes, we will be a threat, if we aren't more taken seriously. I hope we don't have to FORCE people to listen, but it may come to that. That's why my reminders.

And, I agree with you that all the problems that we, as a nation, have allowed to accrue may well be insurmountable.

edited to say that my last sentence can be expected to get the usual sermon from those who insist that nobody ever look at the really downside of what we're dealing with. Some will be behind such an impossible wall that they WILL give up.
