Food allergies!
http://www.dailymail.com/story/News/2007081043/Man-says-hold-the-cheese-claims-McDonalds-didnt-sues-for-10-million/

A Morgantown man, his mother and his friend are suing McDonald's for $10 million.
The man says he bit into a hamburger and had a severe allergic reaction to the cheese melted on it.

Jeromy Jackson, who is in his early 20s, says he clearly ordered two Quarter Pounders without cheese at the McDonald's restaurant in Star City before heading to Clarksburg.

As a sufferer of severe, life-threatening peanut allergy, as is my dd9, I can empathize. Don't know if I'd ask for that much though. Maybe as a starting point, expecting it to be much less.

2. Generally dd = dear daughter. The number would be the age of the child.

3. Ridiculous
If he was insistent enough to ask for "no cheese" five times, don't you think he'd at least peek at the sandwich before shoving it down his throat? And I love how they called McDonalds first, rather than a doctor. This just smells funny to me.

4. Lots of folks have food allergies
and don't know it. Besides lactose intolerance and peanut allergy, folks can be allergic to eggs, any plant in the nightshade family, and gluten (and these are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head!) My doctor said once she found a patient with diabetes had a weird reaction to green beans--they, of all the foods, made her blood sugar rise really fast! So if you have "something wrong" but don't know what it is, check with your doctor about food allergies.

And check your food before you bite into it if you're eating out somewhere.

5. If I was that sensitive to any common foods I would stay away from fast food joints.

I wouldn't put my life in the hands of high school kids working a crappy McJob at minimum wage.

6. Hm...not that I particularly sympathize with McDonald's, but why didn't Mr. Jackson check the food?
I don't usually trust fast food to get my order correct, and I don't have any food allergies. If biting into something would kill me, I'd check it before leaving, and certainly before eating it.

I wish him luck, though...McDonald's was negligent (I don't see intent, though, unless there's something not in the article), and maybe this suit will help bring awareness.

7. The more I think about it
I think this was a set up. It just doesn't sound right. I know someone with a peanut allergy, and they don't even frequent restaurants where peanuts might be served. It seems way to convenient that this guy goes into a darkened room to eat this burger, when all he had to do was look at the damn thing to realize something was wrong.

There should be an investigation. What else did they order? Since they were in a darkened room, is it possible he mixed orders with his friend's? Can it be proven that the cheese on the burger is actually McDonalds' cheese?
