Mine owner Murray to Sen. Boxer: "I resent you bringing up injury rates at my mines"
A co-owner of the Crandall Canyon coal mine, where six men were trapped following a cave-in on Aug. 6, 2007, recently got into a combative debate with U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer -- over the carbon emissions from his mines.

Robert Murray, vice president of Murray Energy Corp., testified before a Senate committee on June 28, 2007. During the hearing, he criticized Senate members for proposed cuts in carbon dioxide emissions from American coal mines, saying that they would only harm American workers. "You people inside the Beltway, you Senators... don't have the foggiest idea what a person does to pack a lunch and go to work, or wear a hard hat," Murray said, angrily.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, (D) Calif., then produced paperwork that claimed Murray's safety record was sub-par. "You say how much you care about ordinary people... but you own the two largest mines which recorded injury rates that are about 1/4th higher than the national average," she retorted. "So let's not have a double standard about how much you care about people."

"You are flat-out wrong," Murray snapped. "I resent you for bringing this in, because my employees are important to me. And I take their safety to bed every night."

"I'm not going to argue with you, sir," Boxer said. "But I don't appreciate you attacking the members of this committee."

4. She should have said, "Actions speak louder than words, Mr Murray.

You're old enough to be told that. There's no need for you to spit the dummy."

Do you imagine we have nothing better to concern ourselves with than your resentment, because you are confronted with an ugly truth - not a matter of hearsay, mark you, but backed up by the figures.

Your record would be a disgrace to a mine proprietor quite overtly insouciant of the welfare of his employees. But your maundering about your hurt feelings in this most grave matter, frankly strikes me as utterly disgraceful.

10. It just isn't appropriate at this time...
wait until the miners are rescued then go after the owner. Arguing now would be in extremely bad taste.

7. The money this cheap-skate saved is gone with this mess.
A neocon asshole mining on the cheap. This man should be put out of business. This man hates taxes and government. I hope no taxpayer money is being used to fix his greedy mine disaster, and if it is he should have to pay it all back. after all he hates taxes and government.

Presumably based on statistics and/or reports of the people who are actually down in the mines every day (as opposed to those confined to padded chairs under air conditioners).

12. This guy is lucky his mine isn't in China
They're starting to execute predatory capitalists there. I am not saying I condone it, but I am saying that some cultures treat these predatory capitalists as murderous assholes they truly are.

23. Don't mistake China's actions as "Justice".
Edited on Sun Aug-12-07 12:41 PM by Morereason
They are not concerned about what is right, but about the economic consequences. Those actions are symbolic only. Corruption, pollution, abuse, are rampant in China. They could care less who is getting hurt until it hurts the bottom line.

But I do agree with you in principle. The consequences that corporations should have to face should be MUCH more severe. It would change a lot in our country.
