2. Wait til you get your bill! It's been up to 110 here today on outside
thermometer; can't hardly breathe out there. No, getting a bit better since the sun's going down.
We keep ours at around 80 and it too has been going constantly.

33. I'm in Miami. It's monstrously hot in Florida. You need to....
contact the energy company up there and ask to speak to the meter department and have someone go out and test the meter. Tell them you think it's incorrect. They'll check to see if someone is stealing electricity from you. Also, ask to speak to the Residential Department about energy saving and having someone go out to your house to check it. Explain your situation and tell them your plight. Someone will go out there and check everything. Make sure they do it for free! Tell them you cannot afford to pay a thing and you're in a serious bind! Who knows, cold air might be escaping, and there might be things you can do to keep it cooler inside and pay less. $315 is TOO MUCH.

10. Mine's been running all day and night this past week in Richmond
We've had miserable heat and humidity, and as my husband explains, AC units can only cool to about 20 degrees cooler than the outside ambient temperature plus humidity. The more humid it is the harder it is for the unit to get the moisture out and cool the inside air. I wouldn't worry too much about it, you can't expect miracles from your AC unit when it's like an oven outside.

26. Actually, this is partially true but not the whole story.
Once the inside air is cool, it recycles and can cool it down another 20 degrees, and so on. You must not have enough air conditioning for the house. Or, if you are dealing with a swamp cooler, this could also keep you from getting what you want. But since you are in Orlando, surely you are not using a swamp cooler.

36. I'm in Indiana...
It's been in the mid 90's all week. We have a dehumidifier in the lower level that's been pulling out about a gallon a day. That seems to take some strain off the AC, but it's still running a good bit of the time.

60. You can cool things down until...
You can cool things down until the amount of
heat sneaking into your house (through the walls,
through the roof, through the windows, and through
air infiltration *MATCHES* the amount of heat that
your air conditioner is pumping out.

So if you have a, say, 6,000 BTU air conditioner,
then things can get cooler and cooler until you
reach the point where 6,000 BTU are leaking back
in; at that point, it's as cool as it's going to
get and the AC runs continuously just to "run in
place".

The other issue, of course, is humidity. The less
humidity, the better you'll feel, even if it's
still kind of warm. And humidity control is basically
just an issue of air (humidity) infiltration. Seal
things up nice and tight and the AC will be able to
drain more humidity out of your interior air. But
again, the decrease stops when infiltration (and
the humidity from your own exhalation and sweat!)
matches the amount that the AC can condense.

If you like, you can find web sites that will help
you calculate how big your AC must be for any
given house design and indoor/outdoor air temperatures.

it was 99+ this week with the heat index hitting as high as 113. Last night, after midnight, while I was walking the dog, I felt the most wonderful cool breeze moving in. It was fresh and clean, sending the heavy overcast scudding away. After that, the temp dropped significantly and it only got to be about 83 today with hardly any humidity. I hope that breeze visits every one of you soon!

It's going to cool down overnight. I wouldn't post this except my sister used to drive me crazy e-mailing me the temperatures in Houston during January and February.

We go though 6-10 weeks of hell every winter, but I think the rest of the year is great. I think it's hell because I can't stand the cold, but other people like it.

24. Put icewater on your ears, old trick, works.
Everyone will wonder why you are walking around with wet ears, but you won't care, because you'll be cooool.

It's not hot here in Honolulu, strangely. There's a hurricane that's passing south of us (hopefully) because the cool northern waters are pushing it away. Wonder how much of that cool is melting polar ice. Wonder how badly we'll get hit by the many hurricanes that used to be pushed south, when the ice to the north is gone.

Le sigh.

Anyway put icewater on your ears. You'll be amazed.

25. Do you have your curtains open?
Do you have ceiling fans? I know a lot of non southern people think they're tacky, but they will keep your bills down and the house cool in the summer. If you have curtains, close them. The darker you keep your house in the summer, the cooler it will be. Like I said in another thread, this is how my mother keeps her house, with pathetic insulation, cool in the summer and her bill in the lower $100s.

The high today was 101 plus the index. I just have a window unit (came with the apartment) and one portable room a/c (that I bought last year). both of them have not stopped running for a week. the weather has just been too hot.

Normally it cools down some by 8:30/9pm. But not this week. though it does look like we are headed for a cold front with the highs only being in the 90s next week.
