Cheney Has Moved His Investments Out Of The Country: What Does That Tell You?
Cheney Betting on Economic Collapse?

July 6, 2006
Mike Whitney / Information Clearing House’

“While Dick Cheney has proclaimed that “deficits don’t matter,” his investment strategy shows he’s not banking on the US economy. The US is $8.3 trillion in debt and has to borrow $2.5 billion a day to keep paying bills. Cheney knows that interest rates are going up and the dollar is headed for the dumpster. Cheney, along with many other US-based millionaires, has moved millions of dollars into European bond funds.

WASHINGTON (July 4, 2006) — Wouldn’t you like to know where Dick Cheney puts his money? Then you’d know whether his “deficits don’t matter” claim is just baloney or not.

Well, as it turns out, Kiplinger Magazine ran an article based on Cheney’s financial disclosure statement and, sure enough, found out that the VP is lying to the American people for the umpteenth time. Deficits do matter and Cheney has invested his money accordingly.

The article is called “Cheney’s Betting on Bad Bews” and provides an account of where Cheney has socked away more than $25 million. While the figures may be estimates, the investments are not. According to Tom Blackburn of the Palm Beach Post, Cheney has invested heavily in “a fund that specializes in short-term municipal bonds, a tax-exempt money market fund and an inflation protected securities fund. The first two hold up if interest rates rise with inflation. The third is protected against inflation.”…cont.

“Leahy On Halliburton Move: ‘This Is An Insult To The U.S. Soldiers And Taxpayers’

Yesterday, Halliburton announced that it would be moving its corporate headquarters from Houston to Dubai. Reincorporating in Dubai would mean that Halliburton — which earned $2.3 billion in profits last year — “will be paying less taxes to the U.S. Treasury, even as it collects billions from government contracts.”

House Government Oversight Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA) said he will soon hold a hearing on the matter to “understand the ramifications for the U.S. taxpayer and national security.” One lobbyist said, “If there’s a huge tax shift, then it’s taking money from U.S. taxpayers while they’re taking no-bid contracts.”

Reacting to Halliburton’s announcement, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) told ABC News it was “an insult to the U.S. soldiers and taxpayers.” Watch ABC’s segment” cont….

They are still holding money in an account that I transfered funds to months ago. Their reason for not releasing it is that the account has never been verified by the holders bank. Which isn't so. I still have an account out of necessity but ...

Major article I read about Dubai's angry, restless immigrants from SE Asia, who are crammed into tenements and have to work 6 days/wk. from sunup to sundown, mostly on top of skyscrapers, so the richies in Dubai get richer on their lucrative land speculation and building projects.

Jeremy Grantham: All the World's a Bubble

By Brett Arends

Click here for more stories by Brett Arends

How high will the Dow go? 15,000? 20,000?

How about 36,000?

While euphoria sweeps stock markets here and worldwide, there are at least a few voices of dissent.

One, unsurprisingly, is legendary value investor Jeremy Grantham -- the man Dick Cheney, plus a lot of other rich people, trusts with his money. Grantham, chairman of Boston firm Grantham Mayo Van Otterloo, has been a voice of caution for years. But he has upped his concerns in his latest letter to shareholders. Grantham says we are now seeing the first worldwide bubble in history covering all asset classes. snip

There are no words that adequately express my hatred and revulsion toward these greedy motherfarkers -- and Cheney most especially.

Smedley Butler had a suggestion. Before a war, soldiers and military contractors would be paid the same salaries. I think the same should go for politicians. Salaries, investments... and if war is worth it under those conditions, then maybe it's worth fighting.

That means if he converts back, he roughly doubled whatever he put into it when he's using dollars.

I'm glad to hear that his fund is sickly, but as long as it isn't dropping, that's a stable place for his money.

Cheney's Banker: Beware the Global Ponzi Scheme

I am at times accused of being a pessimist. While I maintain that hope is essential, I am inclined to the belief that things must and will get a lot worse before they get better. By worse, I mean a serious confrontation with deprivation and the limits of nature; by better, I mean a reordering that will bring our civilization closer to the rule of nature, in which our communities will be strengthened and we will re-learn the ancient virtues, including frugality, prudence and self-governance. It seems likely that we will, very soon, hit a wall that will hurt Americans more than the citizens of most other developed nations, precisely because of the binge of gluttony and avarice we have enjoyed for the past sixty-odd years. James Howard Kunstler has described our era as "the greatest misallocation of wealth in the history of the world." Think suburbs; think SUVs; think strip malls and miles and miles of concrete everywhere. Think the death of downtown after downtown, empty storefronts killed by the interstate and the chain-ification of American retail. Think the loss of patrimony, the demise of actual production of goods, the loss of knowledge of how to do things. Think the depletion of resources and the "conquest" of nature. Think of our insistence upon our liberated "lifestyles," purchased by the outsourcing of American jobs to cheap overseas labor, a "lifestyle" based upon slavish dependence upon the petroleum of dictators and Islamofascists, a "lifestyle" supported by the removal of such obstacles as unwanted pregnancies or marriages until unhappiness do us part. Think the gigantic transfer of American wealth, built by generations, to the nations of the Middle East and Asia.” Cont

“Oh, and where's Cheney placing his bets? A recent Kiplinger magazine article tells all. The article, entitled "Cheney's betting on bad news," provides an account of where Cheney has invested more than $25 million. While the figures are estimates, the investments are the real deal. According to Tom Blackburn of the Palm Beach Post, Cheney has invested heavily in "a fund that specializes in short-term municipal bonds, a tax-exempt money market fund and an inflation protected securities fund. The first two hold up if interest rates rise with inflation. The third is protected against inflation." I guess these are those "high quality bonds" about which Grantham was speaking - a nice bet when you believe the economy is going to tank or inflate - or, as an energy man would likely know, both at the same time.

Even more interesting: Cheney has invested another (estimated) $10 to $25 million in a European bond fund, suggesting that he is counting to strike it rich on a steadily weakening dollar. I guess "Old Europe" isn't all bad after all - at least not their currency. As Blackburn wryly notes, "Not all bad news is bad for everybody." Money talks; patriots walk.”

22. Halliburton has deep ties with Iran---could it be things going sour & that's why BushCo wants to
invade Iran?

http://www.perrspectives.com/blog/archives/000552.htm

Romney, Cheney in Deep with Iran Investments

In a high profile effort to bolster his credibility on national security, 2008 Republican White House hopeful Mitt Romney last week called on New York to divest its pension fund of any holdings in firms doing with business with Iran. But as it turns out, it is Mitt Romney's former employer with the ties to Tehran. And as you'd expect, Dick Cheney's Halliburton is in deep as well.

snip: In 2004, the CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes detailed the Iranian business dealings of Cheney's former company, Halliburton. Despite the prohibitions signed into law by President Clinton with his 1995 executive order and the Iran and Libya Sanctions Act of 1996, Halliburton continued to reap the profits of business with Iran through its non-U.S. subsidiaries. While U.S. law bans virtually all commerce with the rogue nations, Halliburton was able to jump through its major loophole: the rules do not apply to any foreign or offshore subsidiary so long as it is run by non-Americans. snip

Though he does not benefit directly from the Iran contracts of Halliburton's foreign-based subsidiaries, Cheney continues to have financial ties to his former firm. Despite Cheney's assurances that "I've severed all my ties with the company, gotten rid of all my financial interest," a 2003 report by the Congressional Research Service found that the Vice President retained 433,000 shares of Halliburton. In addition, Cheney received $162,392 and $205,298 in deferred payments in 2001 and 2002, respectively.

27. The Irony Here
Edited on Mon Aug-13-07 05:49 PM by Me.
Part of the business KBR had with Iran was selling components for WMDs, the very thing he now thinks we should bomb them for.

edited to add: One of the contentions as to why Cheney had Plame outed was that as she was in the nuke proliferation division she might be getting too close to Cheney allies and KBR deals. Speculation, as nothing ever came of that line of thinking. On the other hand, you never know, it could have been 2 birds with one stone.

30. It's not a secret
Hali was selling nuclear components to Iran in violation of existing laws at the time. Yet another example of how selective they are about enforcing the law, even before the unmitigated lawbreaking that has occurred in the last 7 years.

You know, I'm having trouble finding any examples of how our country was above board and an encourager of freedom now that things have come out into the open. Everyone points to the fact that we stopped Hitler, but I don't buy that- we sold out the german people to the USSR, and we have merely replaced the Fuhrer with ourselves since then.

24. New Investments By Cheney: Funding the Iraqi Xmas rush
Edited on Mon Aug-13-07 05:42 PM by dragon82a
In order to give a further jump start to Iraqi and U.S. officials think Iraq's ailing economy could get a kick-start from U.S. consumers interested in giving terrorist-style clothes pieces of apparel as Christmas presents.

For example:

The "Allah is Great" is an off-the-shoulder suicide bomb carry all. This stylish piece of clothing is light, portable, designed by Armani and can carry twenty kilos of lethal C-4 to blast those infidels to the neither hells. Designed for the female suicide bomber in mind the designers motto is "Why sacrifice femininity for firepower?" Comes in six different colors.

The "IED lite" A colorful, but lethal combination of portability and extreme kill power, the lite is being marketing to that NRA enthusiast that has "A mans home is his castle" foremost in his mind.

"We are hoping if everything goes well, by Thanksgiving and Christmas we will have from the Mosul factory teenage kevlar clothing, and from the Najaf factory ready-made suits and sniper togs, and from the leather industries here, leather jackets, bomb satchels and so on," Sami al-Araji, the deputy industry minister, said Sunday during the announcement of a plan to put state industries back to work.

"And frankly, considering the nature of your president's last executive order concerning his usurping of total power in an "emergency", you might even find practical uses for our clothing, too.

Araji said a U.S. team led by Paul Brinkley, the deputy under secretary of defense for business transformation in Iraq, was in discussions with major U.S. retailers like Sears, Wal-Mart and J. C. Penney to have the clothing on sale in some major cities by the holiday season.

37. The French Were/Are After Him
Don't know if the investigation is ongoing.

Will the French Indict Cheney?

Doug Ireland

“Yet another sordid chapter in the murky annals of Halliburton might well lead to the indictment of Dick Cheney by a French court on charges of bribery, money-laundering and misuse of corporate assets.

At the heart of the matter is a $6 billion gas liquification factory built in Nigeria on behalf of oil mammoth Shell by Halliburton--the company Cheney headed before becoming Vice President--in partnership with a large French petroengineering company, Technip. Nigeria has been rated by the anticorruption watchdog Transparency International as the second-most corrupt country in the world, surpassed only by Bangladesh.

One of France's best-known investigating magistrates, Judge Renaud van Ruymbeke--who came to fame by unearthing major French campaign finance scandals in the 1990s that led to a raft of indictments--has been conducting a probe of the Nigeria deal since October. And, three days before Christmas, the Paris daily Le Figaro front-paged the news that Judge van Ruymbeke had notified the Justice Ministry that Cheney might be among those eventually indicted as a result of his investigation.” Cont…

Dick Cheney and the $5 Million Man

Doug Ireland

The Securities and Exchange Commission has finally opened a formal investigation into allegations that Halliburton (in partnership with French petro-engineering company Technip) funneled $180 million into a slush fund to pay bribes in the construction of a $6 billion Nigerian gas refinery--a scandal that French authorities have been probing for a year (for background, see Doug Ireland, "Will the French Indict Cheney?" December 29, 2003).

The energy conglomerate formerly headed by Dick Cheney disclosed the SEC probe (as it was required to do by law for any legal action potentially affecting the company's stock) on June 11. The timing of the disclosure was no accident--it was a Friday, the last day of the interminable Reagan funeral ceremonies, and Wall Street was thus closed. The national press corps focused on little else but the burial, so the SEC investigation got scant attention in the weekend papers (even the New York Times ran only a brief AP dispatch on its website).

Although the US media have shown little interest in the story, the investigation of the Halliburton Nigeria scandal by France's most celebrated investigating magistrate, Judge Renaud Van Ruymbeke, has continued making headlines in Paris--where the latest revelations bring the scandal right to the front door of Halliburton's Houston headquarters. 79. Which conservatives?
The dupes, or the ones raking in the cash?

The dupes are just greedy, hateful, stupid dupes... the ones making a killing, well... that's obvious.

the Bush's bought property in Paraquay. Now this! Rove quits! We've recently had reports of terrorist warnings. Do they know something we don't? Again!? :wtf:
Watch if Rove leaves the country. Hmmm.

42. IF he isn't making a bet against the economy
then most likely it is because he already knows that when he leaves the White House he is no longer welcome in this country (remember the video where his own neighbors pulled him down in effigy?). Rove probably figured it out and there's a good possibility that Bush has by now after Cindy Sheehan's efforts in Crawford.

49. Dual Citizenship....Here and Austria
Check the extradition policy of Austria to find why he retains this status.
It probably wont matter if he can achieve clemency from the Idiot in Chief though.

The dual citizenship can be handy in case of impeachment of his mentor however.

How did he do it?

I'm not particularly happy that a VP has dual citizenship. It presents the possibility of conflict of interest.

57. interesting question
<snip>

We have made fewer advances on this issue in Europe, but some progress has been made. Our extradition treaties with Ireland, Italy, and the Netherlands permit the extradition of nationals in some circumstances, and our recent treaty with Switzerland contemplates extradition of nationals whenever the requested state is unable to prosecute in lieu of extradition. However, most recent treaties with European countries such as Austria, Cyprus, France, and Luxembourg permit but do not require extradition of nationals, and those countries currently have no discretion under their internal law to extradite their nationals. These new treaties do recognize that if either treaty partner denies extradition solely on nationality grounds, it is obligated to submit the case to its competent authorities for purposes of prosecution under its domestic laws if requested.

51. I thought presidents and VPs had to have assets placed in
blind trusts while in office. They weren't allowed to make any financial decisions about investment holdings.

That's what I thought I once read. No longer true?

52. Cheney is the lowest form of human scum on the face of the earth . . .
already extraordinarily wealthy when Bush picked him to head up his VP selection process, he chose himself and then proceded to become filthy rich while prosecuting an illegal war and giving huge contracts to his own company -- which was still paying him . . . and they did a shitty job at everything they touched to boot . . . and though I can't prove it, I'm personally convinced that he had a major role in arranging the event that triggered the war, i.e. 9/11 . . . look up scum in the dictionary, and you'll find his picture . . .

66. Bank on THIS!
BE HEARD! A GENERAL STRIKE SEPT. 11th STAY HOME – BUY NOTHING

GS are effective. If you check out recent success stories of how GS have brought oppressive governments to their knees and they had to listen to the people you too would wonder why we haven't been using this tactic earlier.

Our phone calls, letters, emails, marches, protests and our votes are NOT being listened to! If enough non-essential people stay home from work to bring this country to a standstill and do not purchase anything for that one day we'd be heard.

What have we got to loss? Nothing else is working.

We can't wait till the 09' for the change.

We can't wait for prolonged investigations that are being stonewalled to get justice.

We can't wait for impeachment to be put "back on the table".

We can’t wait for our so-called representatives to grow a spine.

We can't wait period! Too much time has been wasted already!

Take the day off for PEACE! Everyone, cab-drivers, bakers, bankers, sales-persons, waiters, cooks, shoemakers, city workers, state workers, bus drivers, lawyers, everyone, stay home, buy nothing.

Ask yourself is it worth one day out of your life to save one persons live?

Out of Iraq/Impeach NOW! SEPT. 11th GENERAL STRIKE! SPREAD THE WORD!

weeks ago...said they were liquidating their blind trust...used the excuse that they wanted to avoid any conflict of interest.

People!!! If you can change your 401Ks to a money market acct....DO IT! I was shocked to find out that some do not have that option...in that case, a high quality bond fund. Good Luck everyone....fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

BushInc became STRONGER without the congressional scrutiny they had been getting in the 80s and early 90s. So they drop out and regroup and come back stronger and PRIVATIZED to the teeth.
