Male sex appeal lies in face shape
Male sex appeal lies in face shape

Forget twinkling eyes, a nice smile or expensive aftershave. It seems the secret of male sex appeal may come down to a simple calculation.

According to palaeontologists, the dimensions of the region between the mouth and the eyebrows are crucial in determining how attractive a man's face appears to the opposite sex.

Research carried out at the Natural History Museum found that, at puberty, the height of the upper face - the area between the lip and the brow - develops differently in men and women. Men have evolved short faces between the brow and upper lip, which makes their jaws appear larger, their cheeks more flared, and their eyebrows more pronounced.

Unlike other facial features, however, the difference "in upper facial height" cannot be explained in terms of men being bigger than women. Researchers believe men have evolved the features because they appear more masculine.

1. Since only one of the men on that list appeal to me...
I have to ask: DID THEY BOTHER TO TEST THIS THEORY ON WOMEN????

10. Men have a very long history of gathering in smoky groups
and asking each other what women really want.

It never seems to occur to them to ask women.

Likely this study is more of the same.

For us, it's not the looks, not once we're over about 20. It's about the whole package.

4. "...men have evolved the features because they appear more masculine." And women have evolved
their features because they appear more feminine. Was there a missing link whose face was neither feminine nor masculine that was considered so ugly that no one wanted to reproduce with it?

40. ??? He's always seemed somewhat pretty and delicate to me.
Not exactly what I find sexy.

I don't know who half the men on the list are, and the one's I do know I don't find the least bit attractive - they're all pretty boys.

I like manly men - Daniel Craig, Liam Neeson, Ciaran Hinds, Gabriel Byrne, Clive Owen, etc. - the kind of guy who looks like he's been beat up a few times. So much for the symmetrical face theory. At least for me.

Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 02:24 PM by shain from kane
From the internets ---

"His appearance, facial moles, mutton chops (sideburn-moustache combination), and gravelly voice, have made him an instantly recognizable cult figure, known beyond the world of rock music."

Let's hear it for facial moles. How do they explain those?

13. What is it about Romney that makes him sneaky looking I can't tell
but when I look at him that's the first thing I think. And lord have mercy I really truly think Fred Thompson reminds you of Deputy Dawg. I know I call him that and it is because he reminds me of him. Every time he talks with his dropping jawls and lowered head -- come on.....he has got to remind someone else.

22. Is it just me or does it seem this list is made up of slightly feminine-looking men?
I'm not putting them down - I think Will Smith is one of the best looking men around (although I am a bit bothered by two members of Big Brother being on the list, even if they are cute...but I digress...).

I just mean that according to this article "masculine" seems to include softer, rounder features, those features associated more with women, instead of the burly Marlboro Man image. Perhaps it's a cultural difference (this article is from England) or maybe it's a sign of the times. Whatever it is, I certainly wouldn't kick any one of these men out of my bed for eating crackers and leaving crumbs, know what I mean?

For those of you who didn't know some of them - like me - here are some pics:

24. Yep - they look like guys teens swoon over - androgynous
Now I thought Sean Connery was masculine looking. How does he measure up? Cary Grant had a certain masculine look.

Johnny has always looked androgynous but cute... Justin Timberlake and Will Smith look like they haven't gotten out of puberty yet. Not bad looking, just not what I would call masculine.

So was there an age limit for this study? Was it all really young women?

31. i only knew three of them, smith, depp, and pitt
they are of a type my male friend calls "the pretty boys," to me, they ARE hot but i guess i can kind of see where they might not seem like the rough and tumble kind of face you would associate with the word "masculine"

just a tough of androgyny can be a good spice in my view

28. Sigh. I knew it was going to be something I don't have -
basically it's saying that wide faces are attractive in men, longer or narrower faces aren't. Yet another reason why I haven't had a date in at least 4 years now, maybe more.

30. The only one on that list who appeals to me is Will Smith, because...
...there's a certain sweetness and humor in his smile that carries to the rest of his face. When I see pictures of the rest of them they don't do much for me at all.

Studies like this are kind of silly. It's already been done with women's faces -- mostly to find out how much certain features need to be exaggerated to capture the attention of men looking at advertising, that kind of thing.

32. Okay, so this feeds into my sexy dream last night....
I've started watching Mad Men on AMC (about a group of ad execs from 1960) The main character, Jon Hamm, is just yummy to me, his looks, his bone structure. It seems I am always attracted to men with dark hair, dark eyes, long faces and amazing bone structure, strong jaw, cheeks.

Luckily my husband fits this bill. :D

I would tend to believe that we are hard-wired for attraction, but as hubby says "there is a lid for every pot." :hi:
