General Casey: "the demand for forces exceeds the supply"

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2007/08/top-army-genera.html

<snip>

When asked if the military has considered a move to reinstate the draft, Casey said "the demand for forces exceeds the supply and if the demand doesn't go down" the Army will need a mechanism to provide more forces. Case said the draft is "absolutely not under consideration" at the moment.

While he warned against continuing the surge for too long, Casey said the troops currently having their tours extended are capable for the moment of bearing that burden. "Ninety days in Iraq goes like that," he said, snapping his fingers.

Casey remarked that in addition to taking a toll on soldiers, the surge is leaving its mark on their families too. Many soldiers currently in Iraq will miss two Christmases with their families.

"There is no question the repeated deployments are having a debilitating effect on the families and children," but he pledged to improve the support infrastructure the military has in place.

1. "Ninety days in Iraq goes like that,"
Wonder if he would think that if he was riding convoy duty in an unarmored Hummer?

3. He knows the draft
would pull in a lot of Yellow Elephants. Very dangerous crowd to have in a firefight. You think they're covering you and then you notice they are running, leaving you in the middle of the shit.

In their case it really is better for the country that they hang around large flags calling people like Cindy Sheehan awful names. It's what they are good at.

4. tell that to my son
he's there until 9/10/07, comes home for 2 months and then redeploys back.

Speaking of infrastructure the military has in place, those qualifying for on base housing will be paying rent in the near future, along with electric and water bills. Ain't life grand.

6. He did not even attempt to hide it 'demand for forces exceeds supply'..You know what that means
You can drive around on fumes with your gas needle resting firmly just below E, but you know soon you won't be driving anywhere unless you add some gas.

THat is exactly where we are in Iraq. And these generals are not even hinting anymore about the fact that the troops are not there to maintain the present operations. They are TELLING BUSH in no uncertain terms --our troops are exhausted, and there are no reserves to send in to support and relieve them.

When Lt. Gen Lute, the war czar, had the audacity to mean 'the draft' in his comments, he was putting it out for public consumption that we are either going to have to find more bodies to serve by a draft or we are going to have to abandon the present operations.

This is about as bold as the top brass will ever get in revealing the danger we are facing.

Simply astonishing.

7. Hey, ever see "The Dirty Dozen"?
You can get all the manpower you want by recruiting in US prisons. There's plenty of guys there that would trade life in stir for a couple tours in Iraq - and they already know how to use guns!

I can't believe they've overlooked this resource!
