Perhaps there's reason for hope after all.
I’ve been noticing something really strange. Relatives, friends and acquaintances of mine, who were never interested in politics, have somehow (finally) taken notice that Bush and Cheney are really bad news.

I first started noticing it a few months ago when a friend (who doesn’t even know who his congressman is) sent me a list he’d made up himself of anti-Bush bumper stickers. I also started noticing that at family gatherings, politics (which was always a non-subject among most of my relatives) was being discussed. And most of these discussions were about how Bush was ruining our country.

Beyond that, I have non-political friends who are now making Bush/Cheney jokes, and others who are angry about tax cuts for the wealthy and are really pissed that someone might be listening in on their telephone calls.

(This is by no means a unanimous opinion. I have acquaintances who still believe that Bush is the greatest thing since the invention of the wheel. But even they don’t seem to be talking about him or defending him much these days.)

I have no idea whether or not any of this will translate into the ruin of the Republican party. Nonetheless, when people with no interest in politics start paying attention, it seems to me that something unusual is happening.

Everybody knows.

2. Wow, it only took them SEVEN years to figure it out.
Sorry, cynical Hissyspit kicked in. There is always reason for hope.

4. The worst thing that can happen to Republicans is that they get into power.

5. I've seen W04 stickers
on trucks in Springfield MO, but haven't heard anyone say anything in favor of Bush/Cheney in a long time. I showed a Republican Kucinich's health page, and she is very impressed and will likely support him!

8. the optimist in me: YAY!
the cynic in me: many of these people will still vote for Thomson (or whomever) because he's different/a TRUE conservative/an Outsider/not Bush (ironic, no?) and won't make the connection to the larger picture. I still think we can and will win this, barring any major election theft, but... I notice quite a lot of right wingers who suddenly hate Bush, but still bad mouth the Democrats too.

one other thing: it shocks me now to run into someone who still vocally and proudly supports Bush, and here in Cinci, there are quite a few of those.
