Kucinich: They're Planning to Attack Iran

Submitted by davidswanson on Wed, 2007-08-15 18:24. Congress | Iran

From the office of Rep. Dennis Kucinich:

Administration's Terrorist Labeling Is a Calculated Plan To Set the Stage For War With Iran

WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 15, 2007) - Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) called the Administration's latest idea to label Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization another step in the lead-up to war with Iran.

"The belligerent Bush Administration is using this pending designation to convince the American public into accepting that a war with Iran is inevitable," Kucinich said.

"This designation will set the stage for more chaos in the region because it undercuts all of our diplomatic efforts.

"This new label provides further evidence for Iran's leaders that there is no point to engage in diplomatic talks with the United States if our actions point directly to regime change, said Kucinich. "Our nation is better served by demanding sensible and responsible diplomatic foreign policy initiatives from the Bush Administration.

"This is nothing more than an attempt to deceive Americans into yet another war - this time with Iran," Kucinich concluded.

1. What Is A Terrorist? A: We're Making That Part Up As We Go Along

http://winterpatriot.blogspot.com/2007/08/q-what-is-terrorist-were-making-that.html

Can't find any terrorists to fight? Can't find any way to start a war against Iran? No problem.

Just change a definition here, another one over there, and BINGO! Now you've got what you need: Iranian terrorists!

You don't believe me, do you? Feast your eyes on this:

The United States has decided to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, the country's 125,000-strong elite military branch, as a "specially designated global terrorist," according to U.S. officials ...

Science fiction? Au contraire! It's the Washington Post, which also says:

The Bush administration has chosen to move against the Revolutionary Guard Corps because of what U.S. officials have described as its growing involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as its support for extremists throughout the Middle East, the sources said.

Involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan? Support for extremists?

Come on! Can't they do any better than that??

How remarkable. How utterly Orwellian. We've never had a clear definition of "terrorism" in the "post-9/11 world", but this is getting even more ridiculous than ever!

The president declares a branch of a foreign country's military to be terrorists, and to justify the declaration, he cites their alleged involvement in two countries which he himself invaded and occupied under false pretenses!!

Oh, well. He's the president, and I'm not. I guess they must be terrorists!

~~~
But seriously, as Chris Floyd points out
http://www.chris-floyd.com/Articles/Articles/Mob_Rule%3A_Gearing_up_for_the_Tehran_Hit /
Mob Rule: Gearing up for the Tehran Hit
Written by Chris Floyd
Wednesday, 15 August 2007
(UPDATED BELOW.)
You think it's not coming, an attack on Iran? It's coming all right. From the NYT:
The Bush administration is preparing to declare that Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps is a foreign terrorist organization, senior administration officials said Tuesday. If imposed, the declaration would signal a more confrontational turn in the administration’s approach to Iran and would be the first time that the United States has added the armed forces of any sovereign government to its list of terrorist organizations.
The Revolutionary Guard is thought to be the largest branch of Iran’s military. While the United States has long labeled Iran as a state sponsor of terrorism, a decision to single out the guard would amount to an aggressive new challenge from an American administration that has recently seemed conflicted over whether to take a harder line against Tehran over its nuclear program and what American officials have called its destabilizing role in Iraq.
The nuggets of fact in the story are chilling, as it shows we are coming closer and closer to the next level of hell – but there is rich comedy to be had in its portrayal of Condi Rice as a champion of peaceful diplomacy, doggedly holding off the bloodlust of Dick Cheney:
A move toward putting the Revolutionary Guard on the foreign terrorist list would serve at least two purposes for Ms. Rice: to pacify, for a while, administration hawks who are pushing for possible military action, and to further press America’s allies to ratchet up sanctions against Iran in the Security Council
26. Yep
The media has been trying to help, by reporting Pentagon lines that they've killed some "Al Qaeda" in Iraq, and the pumping of the story that Iran has been sending incendiary devices into Iraq.
Hey, if I had some asshole hovering over me like Bush has, threatening me, and trying to con me into not using my nuclear power plant, I'd be interested in trying to tie them up in any way possible. If it wasn't Iran, it'd be the soviet union. Freedom fighters use whatever means they can.
We've overstayed our welcome, if there ever was a welcome mat in Iraq. The people are ready for us to leave, and to be allowed to get on with running their country in the way they want to run it. We need to oblige, then we will no longer have problems with Iran. But with the U.S. looming on both sides like bookends, well, I'd be worried too. It is, like so many other things, a problem we've brought on ourselves.
34. Well... Dennis is actually trying to get into the WH...
I don't see many other candidates trying to change their stances.
I think the party is moving that way, slowly... Dean being at the DNC would seem to indicate that the non-triangulating left is making some progress in that.
Why'd you put "truth-telling" in quotes?
of war powers. This is no time for vacations. Dump the stump! Madame Squeaker has got to go!
We cannot risk an attack on Iran or any other country in the Middle East or South America. The war drums are beating louder and the media and the talking heads are supporting attacking Iran. Have they gone completely insane?
Edited on Wed Aug-15-07 05:26 PM by KaptBunnyPants
Even Edwards, who I also like, doesn't have the courage to oppose this inevitable shit storm. This is probably the single biggest obstacle DK has to winning, as well. Opposing this insane escalation of the war is like being an avowed member of the Aryan Nation to members of AIPAC and like minded groups. Seeing as how they're already calling Dailykos a "hate-site" because they allow people who disagree with that war to post there, if Kucinich hits the tipping point and becomes worrisome I imagine we'll see similar attacks on him.
15. Those pushing fopr War with Iran obviously don't know about
the eight year War between Iraq & Iran or don't give a damn about America. What do I mean? Having learned about that War has show me what the Iranians are capable of when it comes to an attack on their country. They are willing to go to whatever it takes to defend their nation. A War with Iran would spell a great disaster for America.
17. The latest platter of steaming bullshit is that Iran is helping the Taliban
Right. Of course Shi'ites want to help a crackpot Sunni fringe that wants to eliminate them. Makes sense to me! :sarcasm:
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/081507M.shtml
Iran has repeatedly denied that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons, that it is helping in any way to ease attacks on American troops in Iraq or that it is shipping any weapons to the Taliban, a group Iran opposed in the 1990s.
On Tuesday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad again dismissed American complaints that Iran is providing weapons to the Taliban. Speaking in Kabul, Afghanistan, after talks with President Hamid Karzai, he said Iran was "fully supporting" its new government.
Mr. Karzai played down the dispute over the weapons shipments, as he did during a visit to the White House this month. He said that Afghanistan and Iran were "brothers" and that both the United States and Iran were helping reconstruct his country.
In June, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said the volume of weapons reaching the Taliban from Iran made it "difficult to believe" that the shipments were "taking place without the knowledge of the Iranian government." In a television interview the same day, Assistant Secretary of State R. Nicholas Burns said there was "irrefutable evidence" that the weapons were coming from the Revolutionary Guard.
