Neighbors Say Late-Night Ritual Woke Them

WAUKESHA, Wis. -- A Waukesha woman who claims she's a witch was arrested on suspicion of disturbing her neighbors, police said.

Neighbors along a typically quiet Waukesha street said they woke up just after midnight Tuesday to quite a commotion, reported WISN-TV in Milwaukee.

"All of a sudden I'm seeing flashing lights, firecrackers and all sorts of stuff," said neighbor Vicki Denova.

Investigators said Brenna Barney is a Wicca and was practicing a religious ritual because of a new moon.

1. Article says resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
I wonder if any special sacraments were involved in this ritual.

2. Some of those church bells ring pretty early in the morning
Think the cops would respond to a noise complaint about them? BTW Christians, yeah on occasion we use fires, and dolls and other scary occult stuff. Certainly not anything "Holy" like pretending wine and bread is blood and flesh.

16. Wait until you get a mosque in your neighborhood...
Edited on Wed Aug-15-07 06:39 PM by Solo_in_MD
at least with the Baptists its only once a week, late Sunday. With muslims ts 5 times a day, 7 days a week, and loud

24. They should be fined for violating noise laws
Why should anyone have the right to inflict their religion on anyone else?

27. That has been tried, but it was considered a religeous freedom issue
The adhan is called out by the muezzin from a minaret of a mosque five times a day summoning muslims for manadatory paryers. There is a second call known as iqama that summons muslims to line up for the beginning of the prayers. These days it is also done via loudspeakers.

By design to be heard throughout the areas surrounding the mosques, it is an historic tradition within islam (right up there with the murder of non-beleivers) and is defensible on those grounds alone. IIRC there is an effort to block the towering minarets in at least one European mosque that is being built. Already there are cries of sacriloidge.

In the US there is Federal law that severley restricts localities from using zoning laws to stop religious buildings. The good news is there is nothing that stops pig farmers or BBQ resutrants from operating next to mosques.

As for the noise itself, there have been issues in NYC and in Detroit areas have made the news. Not sure how they were setteled:

3. I wonder how offensive it would be if a similar news headline read...
Police arrest "Christian" on noise suspicion

And then proceeded to quote a neighbor about Christian chants and ritualized canibalism.

esp if fire and/or excessive noise is involved.

In other words: what the hell difference does it make that she's a Wiccan or not? Why the need to make that distinction?

10. Hell yes
Have you ever had to listen to a group of people sing some of your favorite songs, all in a different key and half of them unable to carry a note if it were tattooed to their forehead?

Damned right it is a noise disturbance. Any other time of the year, they would be arrested for being the nuisance they are. May all Christmas carolers be boiled in their own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through their heart! Christmas! Bah! Humbug, I say!

9. Be that as it may, it seems obvious they're making a big deal out of her religious preference
when, ultimately, it's not even the issue. She's practicing her own thing, which is fine, but it sounds as if she was a bit too loud, that's all.

It stands out that she's doing something unique and that, in itself, probably helps to sell papers and add the element of "freakiness" :eyes: Who knows?

For the record, I consider myself a wiccan. :hi:

11. Yup, me too.
It's a run of the mill noise complaint otherwise. Really, really slow news day.

My old coven never used firecrackers in a ritual, but some of our off-key chanting and bad drumming maybe we should have been arrested for. :hi:

13. LOL! Hey, we've never used firecrackers in a ritual either.
we've used sparklers, though, at the beach. :D We actually have a pretty kick-ass group of women drummers in our circle. We like to call ourselves, jokingly, "Blessed Beat".

:hi:

20. I have
I haven't been a practicing Wiccan for many years, but I do remember a very entertaining Imbolc that coincided with Chinese New Year. That coven had a very strong Discordian element to it, so interesting ritual juxtapositions like that were surprisingly common.

Wow, does that bring back some enteraining memories, like the pancake esbats where we invoked the Triple Goddess of Triple Goodness: Betty Crocker, Aunt Jemimah and Mrs. Butterworth.

The Charge says, "Let there be mirth and reverence within you." We took that very seriously. :hi:

You might find this amusing: The Chocolate Ritual. I have the Invocation of the Quarters memorized and have been known to use it just before having dessert.

21. Well, something had to be done considering that she practiced
doll cruelty.

"Literally, we saw her take a doll, do a chant and throw it in the fire," her neighbor, Mike Thiel, said.

Will no one think of the dolls?

19. Interesting.
I wonder if she has a fire pit or chiminea in her back yard...that would cut off any protest about the "bonfire."

Was she shouting, or chanting?

Is this because she was really "disturbing the peace," or is it that her neighbor finds her religion "disturbing?"
