So are the cables reporting live from Jamaica, or is that only for storms hitting the US?

I haven't been watching but I'm pretty sure they would never value foreign lives or property enough to cover it.

2. disinterest
The death toll in the Pisco, Peru quake (of this past Wednes.) is now over 500, but I see no mention of it except on the Spanish language stations. We turn down offers of foreign aid offered for Katrina, and turn a blind eye on the suffering of the poor in other countries.

6. What You Mean "We"

And whose fault is that? Yours? Mine? I don't think so. Neither of us own a TV network, nor are either of us, or even all of DU put together, in a position to purchase one.

We turn down offers of foreign aid offered for Katrina,

Did the victims turn the aid down? I didn't think so. The Bush**ler regime turned it down on their behalf.
The same misadministration that has done more to compound their suffering than to help them.

and turn a blind eye on the suffering of the poor in other countries.

Because the media does not report it, for the most part.
When they do, Americans respond generously, as we did after the tsunami.

We are not our media!

3. Well, I'm currently watching it live on CNN - does that count?
And several reports over the last couple of days about Peru, the loss of life, and the difficulty rescue workers are having reaching remote villages. I'm not defending them - just sayin' . . .

7. Let's see if I can remember (it was last night)
Kurt Penhaul (spelling?) - the bald-headed Brit, was in Haiti during the segment I was watching. The discussion made it clear that it is all very well and good to suggest people "prepare" but in the poorest country in the world, the most they might be able to do is close the door on their tin-roofed hut. It was quite serious and thoughtful, actually.

You don't have to like the cable news, RG - I'm not terribly fond of them myself - but in this case, they were making an effort. Will it probably devolve into the sort of insanity normally seen, with air-head reporters holding onto lamp posts while tree trunks fly around their heads? Probably. But last night they were doing a pretty good job of addressing the actual danger to the people who are in the path of this storm . . . just as they did a pretty good job of discussing the human cost of the earthquake in Peru.

Maybe it was just a fluke.
