Rove On Whether He’ll Answer Questions About His Potentially Illegal Acts: ‘Nice Try’

On the Sunday shows this morning, Karl Rove was treated largely with kid gloves by the hosts and was not forced to confront many difficult questions about his ethical improprieties while serving in the White House.

In three Sunday show appearances, he was not asked once about his efforts to politicize the federal government, despite the fact that a front-page article appeared on that very subject this morning in the Washington Post. Rove was also not asked about his role in selling the war prior to the invasion. Nor was he asked about his connections to Jack Abramoff, his use of non-White House email accounts, or his stewardship over the Katrina reconstruction efforts.

On Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace attempted to press Rove on two troubling aspects of Rove’s record: his outing of Valerie Plame and his efforts to dismiss U.S. attorneys who refused to comply with the White House’s political orders. When Wallace tried to press for answers on these issues, Rove repeatedly answered, “Nice try”:

WALLACE: Why did you push to fire some U.S. attorneys in the president’s second term?

ROVE: Nice try.

{_}

WALLACE: What do you think of Joe Wilson?

ROVE: I’m not going to comment. Nice try.

{_}

WALLACE: When was the first time you told the president {about leaking Plame’s identity}?

ROVE: I’m not going to — again, nice try.

Unable to generate substantive answers to legitimate questions, Wallace backed off and moved to other questions.

At the conclusion of the interview, Rove acknowledged that his unwillingness to be candid would intensify congressional pressure on him. “Let’s face it. I mean, I’m a myth, and they’re — you know, I’m Beowulf. You know, I’m Grendel. I don’t know who I am. But they’re after me,” Rove said.

1. "They're after me." There's a reason for that, KKkarl, like your obstruction of justice, Plameleak,
& firing US attorneys, not to mention you stole 2 pRes elections in FL and OH.

Did you see that on Olberman the other night? Some hoodlum...god I need another espresso...was being interviewed while in custody. He did a Rove like rap move and denied everything. But the problem is, it's SO obvious it's pathetic.

Who me? I'm not Goebbels.

Argh. I just spent the last hour looking at Nuremberg trial stuff. Why I'm posting it here is only testament to the fact that I'm never going to wake up today. ZZzzzz.

10. He's not the guy HE thinks he is, either...
"...I’m Beowulf. You know, I’m Grendel. I don’t know who I am."

Since Beowulf killed Grendel in the epic poem, he really needs to figure out that identity thing before his right hand does a Dr. Strangelove and runs him through. Not a bad idea, actually.

6. When did this pig become a saint?

He said that everybody thought Saddam had WMD. I'm just a little peon and I knew for a 'fact' just from reading and watching and being informed, that he had no WMD. The Nigerian yellow cake documents were 'forged'. Forgery to cause death and the take over of another country is a 'crime'! This piece of excrement was lying before, he has lied all along and he is lying now. Face the Nation and Meet the Press gave this damn traitor a pass. This son of a bitch needs to be confronted and his lies need to be exposed.
Why is he able to intimidate the news media? He doesn't intimidate me and I know there are others out there that are a lot smarter than this pig. He is not intelligent. He is cunning in a psychopathic and sociopathic way. :dem:

11. "they're after me"?
Psychopath.

It also reminded me of the quote that Sara McClendon (RIP) got from Poppy: "If the American people knew what we did, they would chase us down the street and hang us."

13. "They're after me." Hm. I wonder what "they've" got on him, and why he resigned.
It's an interesting "they." Indeed, the whole statement is remarkable...

“Let’s face it. I mean, I’m a myth, and they’re — you know, I’m Beowulf. You know, I’m Grendel. I don’t know who I am. But they’re after me.” --Karl Rove

I think he does know who Beowulf and Grendel are, and was thinking ahead to the title of the story, "Beowulf," which is also the name of the hero who slew the monster Grendel. He doesn't mean to say that he's Beowulf, but that he's the monster in the tale, "Beowulf." So he corrects himself ("I don't know who I am"). Could also be some truth to THAT--that he "doesn't know" if he's a hero or a monster--but this comes as an afterthought. Taken altogether, I think he means that his ENEMIES (those who are "after me") don't know what he is--myth or man, powerful Machiavelli, or monster--but they are BLAMING him for something monstrous, have driven him out and mean to see him punished. Old James Cagney gangster movies come to mind. You know (watching the movie) the guy is ruthless, but still you develop a certain sympathy with him, when the Law finally catches up. He is the anti-hero in all our hearts. As the lawmen surround him and trap him--and you KNOW he's going to get get shot and killed--somehow you want him to get away.

Is that what Rove is trying to evoke--either to himself, or to his puppy dog press? The Law (Beowulf) is out to get poor Karl (Grendel), and we're now supposed to switch sympathies, and hope he escapes (cuz what can a monster be but himself)?

"They're after me." Cagney to simpatico blonde bimbo girlfriend, who loves him despite all he's done.

Karl, the script writer for predictable, mythical outcomes. He should have gone to Hollywood.

But this is also NEWS. Rove THINKS "they're after me." What does this mean? WHO does this mean? Which Beowulf has got the goods on Grendel? Which scandal? And do we, the people, get to find out about it?

It's a startling revelation of what HE thinks is going on.
