Cannibal tribe apologises for eating Methodists
Cannibal tribe apologises for eating Methodists

By Nick Squires in Sydney
Last Updated: 3:29pm BST 16/08/2007

A tribe in Papua New Guinea has apologised for killing and eating four 19th century missionaries under the command of a doughty British clergyman.

The four Fijian missionaries were on a proselytising mission on the island of New Britain when they were massacred by Tolai tribesmen in 1878.

They were murdered on the orders of a local warrior chief, Taleli, and were then cooked and eaten.

The Fijians - a minister and three teachers - were under the leadership of the Reverend George Brown, an adventurous Wesleyan missionary who was born in Durham but spent most of his life spreading the word of God in the South Seas.

31. My first thought was
Episcopalians are tastier, why'd they eat the Methodists?

2. Which is why all 19th century Fijians should have had concealed carry permits
This would've never happened.

Yup. Methodists taste better. Ubetcha. Like chicken.

Catholics ... well ... like fish, I guess. (I like sushi.)

10. Taste is similar, but Methodists are a bit stringy...
...while Anglicans are usually plump and tender from chronic aversion to manual labor. Plus, there are about 20 million more Anglicans worldwide than Methodists, so eating Anglicans is probably a more sustainable diet.

23. So the "Rev." Brown sends his "people" out to raid villages.
Edited on Sun Aug-19-07 05:48 PM by LWolf
<snip>He reluctantly agreed to launch a punitive expedition, ordering his men to burn down villages implicated in the murders and destroy wooden canoes.

The "prince of peace" embassy.

I wonder if the apologetic descendants were able to keep a straight face long enough to make their apology.

Yet more pro-Western Canon rhetoric.

Europeans were cannibals... and still are, especially their puritan American diaspora.

38. Methodists not really Puritan in outlook
for one thing, they are really into hymn singing and composing (Charles & John Wesley), something the Puritans disliked.

I'm not sure they would taste any better than the average Anglican. (John Wesley was a disgruntled Anglican minister when he came up with the idea that became the Methodist church.)

50. No need to apologize unless they served the wrong wine with methodist
that can be tricky...

Catholics are best served with a hearty red wine...a merlot

Methodists I think should be served with a dry chardonnay...
