Blipverts, is it just my television or are there millions of viewers out
there who are getting one to two seconds of a commercial only to have it immediately switch to another as if it were "an honest mistake" on the channels part. I find this annoying and immediately change the channel. If they are having trouble getting people to pay attention to things they either don't need or don't want then I suggest they give it up. This technique seems somewhat dishonest and possibly immoral cuz they are playing with your brain in a small sort of way, subliminal programming perhaps to get you to remember or purchase something you ordinarily wouldn't give a minute of attention to.

1. I see them too, but I think only on cable.
I also notice that the full-length ads they show often have the last few seconds chopped off (amusingly, that's often the bit that contains the contact details for the advertiser). I think it may simply be some timing issue relating to when the main cable network hands over to the local affiliate so the affiliate can show local ads. You get a second or two of the main network's ad, before it switches to the local stuff. Then that delay reverses itself at the end, so you lose a second or two of the last ad before the show comes back on.

4. I think you're right
About the ads timing as they switch to local ads.

This never happens to me, and I have Dish Network so there is never any local/national ad switching.

2. It's Comcastic!
I notice it, too.

But everytime it happens, the ad that comes on is for Comcast.

It drives me crazy.

And it's Comcastic!

3. I know I do that the second a Head-On commercial comes on...
... Can't stand those fuckers. I'll never buy the product simply because I hate their commercials so much. Just like AFLAC. I don't know where ad execs ever got the idea that annoying potential customers was a good idea.

5. You Remember The Names
The as execs figured those ads that you find so objectionable would work.

And it appears that they have.

YOU even remember the product being pushed by the ads.

Think of all the other people that remember the names of the products.

THAT is one of the biggest goals of advertizers -- and it is especially effective if the ad (like both AFLAC and Head-On) is short.

9. I hate it too
It's the one commercial that make me wanna throw things at my t.v. There's just something really irritating about a bad actress attempting make the reading of medical warnings sound natural.

10. Wanna take care of "Head on", applied directly to the forehead??
Edited on Mon Aug-20-07 07:29 PM by 4MoronicYears
Imagine you were able to put together a video for Youtube. Imagine you got footage of a dozen or so nasty head on collisions. Then imagine you stitched them all together and each time a crash occurred the annoying phrase "Head on, apply directly to your windshield" or some such thing.

I bet that would leave a more lasting image in peoples' minds and the sales of Head On just might run into a headon collision with poorer sales. Perhaps then they would change the name and the advertising scheme that seemed like such a wonderful idea at the onset.

I'm mean I know, but sometimes you have to fight fire with fire. Headon, apply directly to your bumper:

Toyota MR2 headon collision, NOTHING LEFT.

Compilation of car crashes to hiphop, easy to change the audio to ya know, Head on, apply directly to your bumper. Oh my gawd, I clicked back to see a few scenes... these are some nasty accidents.

13. Well, there is nothing stopping you from taking the collision videos
from youtube, pasting a few together and setting Headon, apply directly to your bumper/windshield to a catchy melody. It will go very fast on youtube, virally speaking so I suggest to you, (please don't call me if you get sued by the psychers) do it and have fun with it, even if you don't publish it, you will feel better for having a poke at these annoying people and their tactics.

8. In any nationally broadcast show, radio or TV, there are "local opportunities".
These local opportunities are commercial time spots where a local broadcaster or a regional cable service provider may insert their own commercials over whatever the national provider is broadcasting. The feed may be switched from national to local manually or by an automated system. In radio, longtime listeners to AM syndicated broadcasts might recal hearing clicks or tone. These signals are used to trigger the local automation equipment.

Sometimes the switch from the national feed to the local feed is not instantanious, sometimes the person is slow at the switch.

Blipverts. Great episode. I worked on that show.
