1. Boo-friggin-hoo....
Yes. This is the pressing issue for each and every American. Not healthcare, a quagmire in Iraq, potential war with Iran...No.

It's an alleged shortage of bullets for police dept's. As if they couldn't go down to the local Army & Navy and buy enough ammo to arm a small army.

4. What? No made in China bullets?
And we are the GREATEST country on earth, (mommy said so!) certainly we have enough bullets. But not enough brains, clearly.

5. Are military sidearms really being used that much in Iraq?
The M16 and other assault rifles do not use the same caliber of projectile as do most police handguns.

The M9 9mm Beretta is the standard US military sidearm.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/m9.htm

Sidearms are not generally used in combat unless the situation is dire, such as being out of ammo for your main weapon.

My brother was out shooting 45 and 9mm fully auto weapons the other week and I don't recall him saying it was hard to get 9mm ammo.

Frankly, this sounds like bullshit to me.

7. If an ammunition plant switches its 9mm production machinery to load 5.56x45mmm
then the 9mm supply will be impacted to some extent. Not sure how much that is occurring, though. Copper and lead prices are also way up, which doesn't help.

It is definitely most pronounced for rifle calibers, though. .223 Remington is by far the most common caliber for police patrol rifles, and it's also the #1 or #2 most popular civilian centerfire caliber in America. 7.62x39mm is also scarce these days.

A few years ago, 7.62x39mm was $1.75 for a box of 20; the most recent that I bought (few weeks ago) was over $7.00 (eek). Wal-Mart has been out of .223 target ammo more than they've had it, over the last few months.

8. I recall hearing a while back that the US military was buying ammo from Israel..
As far as I'm aware most of the 7.62 ammo is used in automatic weapons rather than assault rifles, but I'm way out of date on that stuff.

I just don't see how 160k troops, the majority of whom aren't trigger pullers anyway, can use that much ammo in a COIN operation.

Kinetic combat burns ammo at a tremendous rate, COIN though is more akin to police work than kinetic combat.

Aren't most of the US personal arms limited to three shot bursts?

That kind of rules out spray and pray, what really burns ammo.

Actually this subject certainly makes it clear that the situation in Iraq is anything but stable and improving.

9. 7.62x39mm is the AK/SKS round (I own a civilian AK, non-automatic).

The Iraq war has put a hammerlock on most of the world's 7.62x39mm supply, causing major shortages here.

6. As good of a reason as any to bring them home
Terraists will have to brig their own bullets when they follow us home.
