Leahy threatens Bush aides with contempt

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer 14 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A top Senate Democrat on Monday threatened to hold members of the Bush administration in contempt for not producing subpoenaed information about the legal justification for President Bush's secretive eavesdropping program.

"When the Senate comes back in the session, I'll bring it up before the committee," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. "I prefer cooperation to contempt. Right now, there's no question that they are in contempt of the valid order of the Congress."

1. NY TIMES: Senator Upset With the Response to Subpoena
Just like Cheney famously told Leahy ("GFY"), Bush does not comply again.
WH rhetoric is a lie too, feigning a cooperative attitude without turning over document one.

Senator Upset With the Response to Subpoena
By DAVID STOUT - August 20, 2007

The White House did not fully comply today with a subpoena seeking material on the Bush administration’s eavesdropping program, and a leading Democratic senator reacted with anger, if not surprise.

“The time is up,” Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said after the 2:30 p.m. deadline passed. “The time is up. We’ve waited long enough.”

Mr. Leahy said he would bring up the administration’s stance before the full Senate when it reconvenes after Labor Day. He hinted at the possibility of seeking a contempt of Congress citation but emphasized, “I prefer cooperation to contempt.”

2. It should be obvious by now, Sen. Leahy, that
the cooperation you prefer will not be forthcoming. Just go for contempt, preferably Inherent Contempt.

"When the Senate comes back in the session, I'll bring it up before the committee"

This is getting absurd.

12. they are still constructing the dry powder buildings
here's the scenarios

1. docs will arrive just in time for the committee to meet to discuss contempt, thus eliminating the need to hold the bushies in contempt. docs are pretty much useless as they are heavily redacted or otherwise incomplete and another 'deadline' is set

2. bushies are given another "last chance"

3. Spector outraged in the morning and calls for contempt charges, news report that spector is meeting with white house in the afternoon, by the next morning Spector's office issues a statement that another chance will be give to the bushies and Spector's broken arm is not in away connected to his meeting with the bushies

4. the committee votes to bring up contempt charges, committee votes split along party lines, republics call it a poltical stunt

5. Contempt charges never brought to the floor - WHAAAAAAAA we don't have the votes

6. MIRACLE of MIRACLES contempt debate begins but WHAAAAAAAA we don't have the votes for cloture

Mr. Leahy, you haven't noticed that Bushler holds you and your pathetic weakling's threats as just that?
