Train Strikes Man Who Was Texting

**Ok, this is one lucky guy here... he got hit by a train.. and LIVED!**

Train Strikes Man Who Was Texting
Published: 8/21/07, 12:25 AM EDT

ELMWOOD PLACE, Ohio (AP) - A train struck and injured a pedestrian who was sending a text message on his cell phone while crossing railroad tracks, a collision that hurled him about 50 feet, authorities and witnesses said Monday.

Zachariah Smith, 18, waited for a southbound train to pass Monday morning. He then walked around a gate and onto the tracks, apparently unaware that another train was coming from the other direction, said witness Mike Billups.

"The horn was blowing like mad and the kid was text messaging," said Mayor Richard Ellison, who went to the scene and talked to several witnesses after hearing of the accident. "The kid apparently was just daydreaming."

Smith was knocked out by the collision, Billups said.

3. This kid is going to think he's superman.. indestructible
I know this because as a teenager, 16 years old, I was in an accident that should have killed me, or at least injured me very badly, yet I walked away with just a scratch on my knee from my under the dash 8 track player.. I went over an embankment about 40 feet deep, taking out 9 trees with me and totaling the car...

I lived the next 15 - 20 years thinking I was invincible...

I hope this kid wises up..

14. LOL! That very well could have been me!
I used to jump off the riding mower and do tumbles like a stunt man or have one of my friends drive while I dove out of the trailer on the back.

I once tried to jump 10 big wheels, lined up long ways, on a bicycle and I jumped a bulldozer lengthwise on a honda 125 dirt bike.

Extreme sports have come a LONG way since then...

23. It should be thrown out of court; such a suit is asinine.
He was too busy texting his prostitute to even hear the train conductor blowing his horn all those times...

10. Just a thought,
but what if the kid has a mental disorder or is deaf or was attempting suicide? Why would you all just automatically jump in and start throwing these insults. If it's the fault of the text messaging, then yeah it's real funny, isn't it? Our kids are getting killed driving using these things and hit by trains. But let's blame the kids and not the adults who make the things and don't forget to tell every kid that they really need to have one of these things.

I have really got to stop coming to this board for a while.

13. We always forget the other victim.
The guy driving the train for no other reason than being in the wrong place at the wrong time will get to play that scene over in over his mind for the rest of his life. He will always tell himself, "maybe I could've been a bit quicker, a bit more attentive, maybe if I'd done X, my train wouldn't have hit that guy.

15. I have a cousin who is an engineer and went through this. Some guy
decided to commit suicide by jumping in front of a train, and just happened to pick the one my cousin was driving. It really screwed my cousin up for a while... so much that he took a couple years off.. he just went back about a year and a half ago..

In a similar vein there was an incident involving my co-workers a few months ago. A group had gone out bowling and drinking one night; on the way back a guy stood up in the back of the convertible. At freeway speed, the wind pulled him right out of the car.

Frankly I couldn't bring myself to mourn much; he was a dumbass. Completely forgotten was the poor soul who just happened to be behind the convertible. The driver of that car will get to live with that sight and sound seared into their brain forever.
