Ominous
- om·i·nous·ly adverb
- om·i·nous·ness noun
synonyms OMINOUS, PORTENTOUS, FATEFUL mean having a menacing or threatening aspect. OMINOUS implies having a menacing, alarming character foreshadowing evil or disaster <ominous rumblings from the volcano>. PORTENTOUS suggests being frighteningly big or impressive but now seldom definitely connotes forewarning of calamity <an eerie and portentous stillness>. FATEFUL suggests being of momentous or decisive importance <the fateful conference that led to war>.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pretty fucking sad when the general feeling on the street is ominous. Dread hangs over the land and drifts across the world from the ominous White House. We live in fear, we speculate, we theorize, we wonder just what the hell they might pull next, this is no way to live, this is an ominous national epidemic.

Ominous rumblings and saber rattling aimed at Iran, ominous whispers about the highly hyped Iraq report ON SEPTEMBER THE FUCKING ELEVENTH so the point is well beaten into your heads. Ominous speculation on the stock market, on the economy, the draft, the terrorists, on what monstrous insanity will occur during the last few months of the neo con's reign, the whole world looks on in ominous anticipation.

Pretty fucking sad.

1. Every time I see that word...
I think of the opening bars of the theme from "Jaws".

Whatever happened to the concept that we live in "...the home of the brave?"

Bunch of scared pussies if you ask me...quaking under their desk in school as if that was going to do any good. along with the word 'ominous' I see the words:

abashed, aghast, alarmed, anxious, apprehensive, aroused, blanched, cowardly, cowed, daunted, discouraged, disheartened, dismayed, distressed, disturbed, faint-hearted, frightened, frozen, horrified, in awe, intimidated, nervous, panic-stricken, perplexed, perturbed, petrified, rattled, run scared*, scared, scared stiff*, shocked, spooked, startled, stunned, suspicious, terrified, terror-stricken, timid, timorous, trembling, upset, worried

3. Ever see the "Word Finder"?
I don't think they publish it anymore...it had all the modifying words for almost all common nouns and adjectives. It was an ad copywriter's dream.
