I suspect that the Sports Clips franchise (boy's/men's salon) is selling recruiting info.

I suspect that the Sports Clips franchise (boy's/men's salon) is selling recruiting info.
My son has had his hair cut at a Sports Clips for the past year. For those of you who don't know, Sports Clips is a national salon chain with a sports theme, which caters mostly to boys and young men.

At Sports Clips, your name and contact info is kept in a computer. I didn't have a problem with providing the info until yesterday.

When I went in yesterday, the place was plastered with military recruiting brochures, and there was a plaque behind the register that said, "Certificate of Excellence, for supporting the armed forces efforts in your business." (Not verbatim but very close.)

I was completely uncomfortable. I suspect that Sports Clips is giving info to military recruiters in the area.

I didn't say anything. They've lost my business, though. The chain is based in Texas (just found that out after doing a little research this morning). We're going back to our local sylist.

I guess the point of this post is to let parents know that anytime you give your child's information to anyone, even for something as benign as a haircut, it can potentially be handed over to people with other interests in your child.

1. You're nicer than I would have been.
I would have just asked; if I got a "no" answer, I would have asked for assurance. If I got a "yes" answer, I'd let Sports Clips know that I would be passing that information on to 100,000 of my closest friends. :grr:

2. I was in a tremendous hurry...
I had somewhere to be in 20 minutes.

Today, I'm stewing. I know that any phone call will lead to a confrontation, because, as I was sitting in the lobby area, waiting on the stylist to finish my son's hair, the manager was talking to another client about the Democratic debate, and ridiculing Democrats. She said, "Of course, I'm a Republican." Meanwhile, I'm in the lobby, surrounded by recruitment brochures.

That's the first time I visited that I was just sickened by the whole thing. Since it's a franchise, I have no idea who to complain to. Don't know if it's locally owned, or if there's even any central office that mandates what their franchisees can display.

They have lost my business (two visits a month for the past year at a business that's never very busy), and I want to let them know why.

3. Here's their privacy policy:
This seems to pertain to their website, but also to their clients.

5. I'm guessing this is an individual franchise decision - I've gone
to the one locally (Iowa City) for my last two cuts, and was actually planning on going there today for another cut. I don't recall seeing one item on the walls related to recruiting, although this is considered to be a very blue area, being a college town and all. I wouldn't hesitate to call the corporate office, as it seems to be a clear violation of their policy!

6. It is definitely a local thing. Just found this out.
I just got off the phone with their corporate office. After speaking with a rep at corporate HQ, I'm guessing that there will be no more recruiting posters/brochures in the Sports Clips we use, after today.

8. Good for you!! Some of these local franchise owners apparently
get caught up in their own power, and don't realize their actions reflect on the entire corporation. Your actions were certainly not "insignificant" in this case... (see my sigline ;-) )

7. I have never understood why the person cutting my hair needs to know my name

I always tell them to write down whatever they want for a name. When they say they need a name, I usually say, "OK, go with Juan Valdez, there's a name for you."

12. Their sports theme is as odious to me as their military activity, if any.
Just what we need more of: corporate diversion and male entitlement, wrapped up in the "healthy" package of sport.
