Shuttle Endeavour lands safely in Florida
Just saw it live on NASA TV

Glad that cracked tile wasn't a problem!

9. Wait. You mean they will have an all new space craft in 08? That would be great.

13. i meant the Hubble servicing mission, using same ol' shuttle Atlantis
:)

more at http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/hubble/servicing/index.html

In a nutshell, they're going to take out an old camera and an inactive component in one of the instrument bays, put in a new camera and spectrograph, hopefully fix an existing camera & spectrograph, put in new gyros, fine guidance sensor, batteries, and a new blankie. It's the last mission to Hubble. :(

6. They certainly need to address that cracking foam problem
on the main thruster. That's the one that has caused all the problems in the past.

The shuttle needs to be grounded until they can find something more durable to insulate that tank.

I wonder if this might be the solution: http://beverlytang.com/archives/materials/solid_smoke.html

7. I just thought of the same thing when you mentioned it!
It's in the Science forum about solid smoke

I don't know if they can make it hard enough, though...

10. The foam is problematic because it is rigid
Aerogel's distinct advantage is its ability to flex.

Casting something that large would likely be an engineering nightmare, though.

8. They need a new piece of equipment...new spaceship or what ever...
a whole new thing. The shuttles were behind the tech curve on the first mission.

4. BEAUTIFUL!!!
After all these years, I still get choked up and teary-eyed when I see landings and launches.

Announcer said, "You've given a new meaning to higher education!" LOL!

11. Are super-space-rockets climate friendly?
NASA is an obsolete Cold War symbol of techno-supremacy. Put the bird in a museum. I think manned space flight is a silly flying circus. We could have a fantastic deep space program with less than half of that budget.
