NOLA economy roaring back to life....
This is sad - I wonder if this is how some in New Orleans are scrapping out a living.

HANDCRAFTED BIRDHOUSE MADE FROM AUTHENTIC HURRICANE KATRINA DAMAGED HOMES AND FENCES IN THE NEW ORLEANS AREA. THE BIRDHOUSE IS MADE OF WOOD AND THE ROOF IS MADE OF METAL. IT IS FITTED W/ A HANGING WIRE TO USE IMMEDIATELY. A LOCAL CRAFTSMAN CAREFULLY CREATES EACH HOUSE AFTER SALVAGING WOOD FROM HOMES DEMOLISHED IN HIS HOMETOWN. 5 % OF ALL PROCEEDS TO GO TO THE NEW ORLEANS AREA "HABITAT FOR HUMANITY". THANKS FOR BIDDING!

Poor guy only wants ten bucks for it, and no one has bid on it.

5. Actually they intend to overhaul it into big-box shopping
the sort of things most often found in suburban Jefferson Parish: Bed, Bath and Beyond, Dick's Sporting Goods, and the like. Mid-City residents, including my main NOLA connection, are fairly cool towards the project, which would impinge on nearby greenspace and generally overwhelm the neighborhood:

11. Are we talking about the same hospital?
Mercy (Lindy Boggs) in Mid-City is the one slated for the "generica crapscape". Could you be talking about Memorial on S. Claiborne? (That'd be good news, too.)

15. i don't know the name. i thought it was mercy.
it's supposedly your level 1 trauma center.

i didn't know the planning had got that far. a jewel in the middle of a pig sty is not going to be good for the city.

16. I think you mean Charity
if so, that'd be big news that hasn't broken in their MSM, or even the blogs, yet!

Oh yes, it hasn't been my Level 1 trauma center for 16 years. Sixteen loooooooong years. Since it happened, I;'ve been looking for ways to put my talents to work to help the city come back, but so far, nothing beyond the level of an Americorps posting. :(

And what's sadder still ...

Who will buy them knowing that the materials used could be toxic, perhaps having sat in that festering soup of decaying bodies, leaked chemicals from destroyed labs or broken fuel lines, and who knows what else?

3. Ugh, I didn't even think of that.
Will all the debris stay toxic or does it lessen over time?

4. Not sure anyone knows

I don't think anything like that had ever happened before (all of that kind of stuff just tossed together).

I have a friend who went back to NOLA with his uncle to the uncle's house to salvage whatever they could. They were some of the first to be allowed back in. My friend took over 100 photos. Some of them showed this fungus stuff growing on everything and everyone said it wasn't like any kind of mold they'd ever seen before.

8. A friend's family
is from New Orleans. The water completely covered her grandmother's house. While they have no idea what was in that water, whatever it was DISSOLVED her grandmother's wedding china. Not stained, but dissolved.

Needless to say, the house was a total loss.

9. If you're not planning on eating the birdhouse or using it to serve
up dinner, I don't see a problem. It's supposed to hang in a tree outdoors......

18. Don't you have to touch it at all? What about the birds?
Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 07:27 PM by Autumn Colors
Please see comment above (not mine) that has Subject "a friend's family" about toxic soup that DISSOLVED someone's wedding china. Did the wedding china eat the water or did the water eat it?

Sorry, but I don't think I'd want to touch the stuff either. Because touching anything toxic NEVER makes a person sick, right?

:sarcasm:

You'll be buying one and letting your children (or children of other family members) hang it up, right?

19. Don't suppose anybody's ever heard of washing their hands with soap and water.......
I wonder how we ever survived all these years with all the poisons everywhere!

Some folks need to make sure they never leave their glass bubbles.........

2. Still 5 days left.
I am "watching" the auction. This breaks my heart. I was there after the hurricane to help out and having something like this in my yard would be painful. But if he doesn't get a good price for it, I'll buy it.

13. most people have programs so they only bid in the last few seconds of the auction
no one is going to bid 5 days out, that's how the naive and new to auctions end up way over paying for stuff

7. Some local craftsmen have done incredible stuff with storm debris
There is an arts and crafts festival the the third saturday of every month in "The Bywater" a neighborhood near the french quarter. Some of the items crafted from hurricane debris is amazing, mirrors, reflective glass, pictures with macrame bric a brac. I don't think birdhouse is a reflection of the economy. Artisans have been working New Orleans for hundreds of years.

12. The same thing costs $5 in China.
Mind you, the cost of living differences make it easier to live off of $5 in China than in America...

14. NOLA economy roaring back to life..
Yeah.. for certain people... I have 3 different friends who lost houses in N.O. 2 still live with their parents and one moved near me and rented a house. All have lost everything and none have any hope of getting their insurance money. Thousands are still living in trailers, and thousands have no hope. Yeah things are just great :eyes:
