Americans Demand Impeachment
by Don Strasser
Is there sufficient cause to impeach President George Bush, besides hating his guts? Oh my, yes — and impeachment should not be a partisan issue.
Every member of Congress has sworn an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. They should honor that oath or have to answer to the American voters. Democracy and constitution government are at stake.
The grounds for impeachment consist of “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” High crimes and misdemeanors are not limited to actual crimes but include subverting the Constitution, neglect of duty, and abuse of the public trust.
A short list of Bush’s impeachable offenses include, in my opinion:
Deceiving Congress and the people in taking the nation into war in Iraq.
Directing an illegal domestic wiretapping program and other surveillance of Americans.
Permitting and condoning the use of torture and cruel treatment of detainees.
Reckless indifference to human life in the face of Hurricane Katrina and in equipping our troops and the lack of planning for the occupation of Iraq.
Covering up his war deceptions by leaking selected classified information, which led to the outing of a CIA agent.
Instead of fulfilling the constitutional duty to impeach, Democratic leaders are playing a cynical game of exposing Bush’s wrongdoings for maximum political advantage. Republican members of Congress are silent.
So far, 81 American towns have passed impeachment resolutions. If Bush, Cheney and Gonzalez are impeached, it will be because American people demand it.
A writer for the American Progressive observed that, if there is no impeachment, the next president will find in the desk drawer in the Oval Office a loaded revolver for shooting holes in the Constitution. Who wants that?
