Boy, the media dropped the Utah mine disaster like a hot potato, didn't they? Gone are the stories of the faithful praying for a miracle and the constant drumbeat of reports on how much the mine owner was doing to save the 6 trapped miners.
Now that they've abandoned the miners and 3 others have died, the story has been abandoned. That's sad, because the truth and the story that has emerged from this disaster, ie: the bush administration dismantling mine safety, of installing a hack to run the government oversight of the mines, and the sorry record of the owners of the Utah mine is a much bigger and much more important story to be told and to be covered in depth by the media than a rescue effort.
The media was hoping for a miracle recovery, a chance to aver that it was as much the faith of the family members that saved the miners as it was the work of the rescuers. Plan B was to position the story as a tragedy - the miners died, but at least the faithful have their faith to get them through these tough times. Thank god miners have always been people of faith!
But the storyline changed with the 3 deaths this weekend. Miracles and faith seemed like quaint ideas in the face of 3 deaths, 6 miners abandoned and the exposure of the "money over men" mentality of the mine owners and the bushies. That's a story that doesn't allow for miracles, faith or the other "human interest" BS the media likes to trot out whenever these disasters present themselves. Ergo, the REAL story goes begging, buried in the wash of Michael Vick's guilty plea and Jenna Jameson's endoring Hillary for president...and aided by the silence that falls over the media whenever religious belief and prayer are shown to be hollow fantasies that are incapable of affecting change of any kind.
Pretty pathetic.
