Liberals read more books than Conservatives
ASHINGTON — Liberals read more books than conservatives. The head of the book publishing industry's trade group says she knows why _ and there's little flattering about conservative readers in her explanation.

"The Karl Roves of the world have built a generation that just wants a couple slogans: 'No, don't raise my taxes, no new taxes,'" Pat Schroeder, president of the American Association of Publishers, said in a recent interview. "It's pretty hard to write a book saying, 'No new taxes, no new taxes, no new taxes' on every page."

Schroeder, who as a Colorado Democrat was once one of Congress' most liberal House members, was responding to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll that found people who consider themselves liberals are more prodigious book readers than conservatives.

She said liberals tend to be policy wonks who "can't say anything in less than paragraphs. We really want the whole picture, want to peel the onion."

2. I didn't know that . . .
. . . conservatives could read books. Isn't there an injunction against that someplace.

(OK, I know. Cheap shot)

3. Well, gee
Why read a book when you can get all the knowledge you need by listening to Rush and Hannity. Reading is just a waste of time.

Schroeder is right. Why bother with a book when a sound bite requires so much less time and thought.

4. They'll have to redo the survey...
...it's not that the conservatives do less reading, it's just that they read the same book over and over and over. Why shouldn't that be counted as one book per read? :silly: :+

12. And apparently not by much.

"There was even some political variety evident, with Democrats and liberals typically reading slightly more books than Republicans and conservatives."

So for the entire superiority for prodigious book readers is "slight"; what's slightly less than "prodigious"?

Personally, I think it's a bit of an artefact. It would be interesting to control for sex: Slightly more women are left than right, women read slightly more. Does this account for the difference?

Absolute poll numbers (in the aggregate--you can't get information about this point from this selection of results) is at http://www.ipsos-na.com/news/client/act_dsp_pdf.cfm?name=mr070821-4topline.pdf&id=3613 .

7. Well gee golly gosh...
That's a fucking surprise. In addition to her thoughts, I think that it's also because they're afraid to open their minds - it would probably require a few cans of WD-40.

10. Comic books don't count
Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 10:37 PM by Alacrat
nor should "Soldier of Fortune", "Guns and Ammo",or the "Limpbaugh Letter" "Penthouse Forums" and "Jugs"

If they counted all of those, and the truth were told, the numbers would be more equal.

Edited on Tue Aug-21-07 11:21 PM by GreenTea
Republican depend so much on Fox news, Limbaugh, etc. to give them talking points to repeat like robots, zombies over and over...they never do their own research...the Hannity's, O'Reilly's, Coulters, etc. train them to get their info only from republicans like themselves, helps keeps their ratings high as well....Facts mean nothing to these right-wing talking heads...just lies to keep their ideology going and the republican sheep, repeating & repeating what they were told...perfect ignorant repug fools...if they just read and researched for themselves, well they would be these robot, zombies helping multi national corporations fuck them over as they keep taking in the ass and pointing fingers at the Dems!
