PBS Special "Gold Futures" Rosia Montana Romania
If you think that we in the USA have a problem with eminent domain for private corporations you should watch the PBS special on a gold mine proposed in the Rosia Montana area in Romania. The link below provides detailed information on this project and the opposition.

In summary a private gold mining corporation based in Canada, Gabriel Resources, is in cahoots with officials in the Romanian government and a government owned mining company. It wants to forcibly relocate an entire community, destroy old churches and cemeteries, destroy historic 2000 year old Roman gold mines all to build a huge open pit gold mine that will destroy a beautiful area. The open cast gold mining method uses much cyanide and will destroy the environment.

I consider the financial strength of greedy corporations as the primary cause behind many atrocities, wars and corruption in the world. Few corporations display anything other than egregious greed.

1. Here is more info on Gabriel Resorces and Rosia Montana
The link is from MiningWatch Canada:

Opposition Surges to Romanian Gold Project Propaganda

Eighty organizations across Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Moldova, Canada, and the United States released a statement today highlighting the local, national, and international opposition to the Rosia Montana cyanide open pit gold mine project in Romania, refuting accusations of "exaggerations and misleading claims" in a recent film entitled Mine Your Own Business. The film was financed by Gabriel Resources, the Toronto-based mining company that wants to build the Rosia Montana mine.

Contrary to the film's portrayal, local opposition to the project is strong and organized. The statement urges the public to read a message sent by Eugen David, president of Alburnus Maior, a local association based in Rosia Montana which represents families that oppose the mine and refuse to sell their lands to Gabriel Resources. Eugen David was not interviewed by the makers of Mine of Your Own Business despite them being well aware of the association's existence.

If constructed, Rosia Montana would be Europe's largest gold mine and would transform the Rosia Montana valley into four open-pit mines, and the neighboring Corna valley into a tailings dam to hold the mine's toxic waste. Both valleys are densely inhabited, and the project would require 2,000 people to move out of their homes and also lead to the destruction of churches, cemeteries, farm lands, and unique cultural and archaeological treasures in the area.

Thanks, I was wondering how one could express opposition to this project. It seems that this sub-link might help at least with the Canadians. http://www.miningwatch.ca/index.php?/Gabriel_Resources/Rosia_Montana_UA_070905 Do you know if the Canadian govt still supports this mining project?

I find it outrageous that so many people are forced to endure this controversial and detrimental project perpetrated by mining interests.
