7. Please don't fear it so, H.
The nearer I come to it, the less I fear it.

I guess for me it's rather like that proverb about money. It's not money that is evil, but the love of money that is evil.

Just so, death isn't the horrible thing, it's the fear of death that is horrible.

We have more than enough things to fear in this life, but I think death is not one of them. It's as natural as life and love, all part of the Grand Design.

There's a reason they say "Rest In Peace."

11. I'll drink to that

It's the one thing that everyone - everyone - is certain to eventually do, and about which nobody has ever complained.

It's a real good reason to get out of bed and make the most of every day.

I'd probably waste a lot of time if I knew I wasn't going to die someday.

Pile up a lot of yesterdays worth feeling good about - as many as you can.

Get a calendar and mark them off - "today was worth being alive".

2. Meditation XVII: No man is an island
All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated...As therefore the bell that rings to a sermon, calls not upon the preacher only, but upon the congregation to come: so this bell calls us all: but how much more me, who am brought so near the door by this sickness....No man is an island, entire of itself...any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. - Donne

6. Oh Bluebear, thank you for that!

I thought of the quote the moment I read H's OP, for they are some of the most beautiful and inspired words of any writer, ever!

Fitting somehow that you, whom I've seen fighting the good fight around here on DU a lot lately, should post it.

Thank you.

I've been fighting the good fight so much, I know I have ticked some people off. So be it, Molly Ivins said keep fighting for freedom". I cherished her and we must keep fighting.

9. except for any of them...

...who ever did anything that I wouldn't like if I knew about it.

Because the universe revolves around me, my opinions and preferences are more important than anyone else's life or death :hide:

Actually, send me a list of everyone who died today, and I'll check off the one's whose passing is worthy of solemn note, and whose are not.
