snowplows used to remove hail from roads in Austria

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=eng

Hail and thunderstorms continued to hit western Austria early Monday. In Salzburg, one man drowned as he was sucked into a water pipe diverting a small stream. In Upper Austria landslides blocked several roads and traffic collapsed in one region completely after a heavy hailstorm. Up to 10 centimetres of ice covered the motorway and had to be removed with snowploughs, police said. Hailstones the size of tennis balls caused significant damage in Tyrol, destroying parts of the harvest. In both provinces basements and roads were flooded by the heavy rainfalls. Already on Sunday afternoon a 55-year-old man died in a tragic accident in Salzburg when he was sucked into a water pipe during a thunderstorm and drowned. The father of five had attempted to clear debris from a 70- centimetre-wide pipe channelling a small stream on his property, local police said. The current, strengthened by the raging thunderstorm, sucked the man into the pipe. Rescue attempts by his family failed, he was dead by the time he was recovered by the local fire brigade.
