Ahh, GMOs, the biotech gift that keeps taking and taking - lives and livelihoods, health and healthy environments, just to scratch the surface.

NEW ZEALAND: Sheep and goats die due to grazing on GE cotton land

WELLINGTON: The latest studies on GE cotton farming have raised serious concerns about the safety of the crop which is used in food and clothing. A report released in April has found that thousands of sheep died after grazing on the GE cotton land. The sheep and goats were grazing for seven days on tender leaves and pods of Bt cotton that was leftover in the field.

The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is considering submissions for approval of GE Cotton seed and oil for use in animal feed and the human food chain. But the latest report has been released after the closing date for submissions and late submissions are not accepted.

"New findings must be considered fully by the FSANZ as the dire consequences reported in this research could go unheeded. After 10 years, we still have no diagnostic tools to assess possible reactions to GE food", says Claire Bleakley of GE Free (NZ) in food and Environment. "GE cotton should be properly tested on animals and humans for safety, but so far it has not been done" he added.

It was found that workers picking GE cotton suffered severe skin reactions with itching and blistery eruptions leaving a black skin discoloration which was still apparent after 5 months.

I fear we may have opened Pandora's box.

But then again, maybe these gmo species will eventually die out. Perhaps my fear is unwarranted. Still, it's very stupid what we're doing. Humans really suck. I'm so tired of the stupidity.

4. oh We've definitely opened Pandora's box. What Chaps my hide is why my
taxes hafta subsidize and promote poisoning the planet w/ shit like StarLink Corn.Of course, it didn't actually kill anyone that we know of, just sent some folks to the hospital. and we'll never know for sure how many. And of course it was *never* supposed to be in the human food supply chain anyhow, but now there is gonna be some level, however minute, of StarLink Corn in the food chain forever. Deelightful, huh?

5. GE crops have been known to absorb large ammounts of herbicides
This is a problem with GE soybeans. Maybe the cotton sucked up all the chemicals that were applied to the fields and these were what poisoned the animals and workers. In that case, these crops would have to be used only in fields that have never been contaminated with herbicides or pesticides (good luck finding any)

8. Well the problem with that thinking is that
GE crops often REQUIRE a goddamn amount of pesticides to begin with.

And when you look at the third world nations where Monsanto et al plans to get their huge market share - the water and the water table is contaminated with toxins, heavy metals from industrial activity and also of course pesticides.

Even the drinking water.

7. Gee whiz. And when I post suspicions that GM crops are behind CCD,
everyone calls me a wacko.

I guess it can kill sheep, but it's just unimaginable that it can kill bees, too?

17. I think Imidacloprid is more likely
The timescales fit, also the fact that there are not many GM crops in Europe.

12. Yup. I got described as a "paranoid" because I think GM crops
might have something to do with CCD.

14. Couldn't this be what the article is referring to?
At first I thought it was New Zealand sheep and I was surprised that Kiwis would even test GE crops, but the article doesn't say where the sheep were fed the GE crops, so perhaps your reference is what this article is about.

Reading it again, it seems that NZ is just considering approving
the stuff.

15. Another area where the U.S. lags way behind
We don't even deserve to be considered a western industrialized nation. Europe and Australia-N.Z. are way ahead of us in all the important matters.
