Do You Listen To Liberal Talk Radio?

It has been brought to my attention that our Air America Affiliate in San Diego, 1360 KLSD, Home of Stacy Taylor, is going to be changed to a sports talk station! This means we will not hear any of our favorite shows on the radio in San Diego. KLSD will not exist in about a month. This is not a rumor -

Help save KLSD - email Cliff Albert, the manager @ calbert@clearchannel.com and tell him that you want to keep KLSD on the air - we need to keep our liberal voice alive here.

7. Right Winger
Stacy admits his flaws - God bless him - I called in once and told him that he sounds more sincere as a liberal. He is a registered Independent and his views are pretty far to the left - He has come full circle. We really love him here and need to keep Air America alive.

Did anyone catch him filling in for Randi last week while she was on the Alaska cruise? He was fabulous!

21. There was a time...

...when lefties used to have to pretend to be right-wingers to get on talk radio. Just ask Jay Marvin.

Although Taylor has confessed to voting for Bush in 2000. Hey, he admits it. Good enough for me.

Oh, and I wrote about this whole KLSD business on my blog yesterday. Worth a look:

2. You need to hook up with the people in Madison
who saved their station - try the Wisoconsin forum.

Don't tell me, the citizens of San Diego are trying to have their votes counted again, and Clear Channel doesn't like it?

5. We had some great Air America out of New Orleans
until the massive conservative conglomerations decided to buy up all the radio stations. I guess they fear the fairness doctrine as much as limbaugh and hannity.

I listen to NPR most of the time but that certainly isn't liberal. The conservative garbage calls it liberal because it spends so much time spreading the truth.

KLSD is very well received here - Cliff needs to know this - where ever you live, please email him at the addie I provided. You can listen to Stacy Taylor and Scot Tempesta on the morning show via your computer - live link to: http://www.am1360klsd.com/pages/Stacy_Taylor.html

Scot has his own show on Saturday from 10 to 1 and Craig Elsten has a show on, the same time on Sunday -

We really love our morning team and we need them here - they keep us lefties sane. Also - Who needs more sports talk????

8. After 2006 the call went out "shut it down."
All 4 of Ohio's progressive talk stations were shut down.

Like the public airwaves should be for the public .... come on.

26. It's true
Not that Air America was handled properly by the Clear Channel station here in Columbus, anyways, but I listened every day and loved it (when it wasn't pre-empted by basketball or baseball...who play a ZILLION games!).

Believe me...the station was not pulled because it was unpopular. It was pulled just because.

9. I live in Orlando FL and we don't have liberal talk radio here....
....the only talk radio you can get in Orlando FL is hard core RW fascist talk radio or entertainment brain candy talk radio or religious RW talk radio where everyone who is not a goose-stepping fascist is considered a communist! Oh, we also get AM radio stations which provide directions and event calendars to the various tourist theme parks. Orlando is encircled with a Swiss Cheese Curtain and Limburger Cheese cease pools.

Who cares - his show is awful and at least partially why the format does not really work. A one note Johnny, indeed. Plus the self-important, my show is so important horseshit is a lame act.

12. Our local AAR affiliate is doing some dumb things, but I still listen
They sometimes cut off Rachel Maddow to air Cardinals baseball (uh, don't we already have local AM sports stations for that?) and on Saturdays it seems like they're always airing infomercials whenever I get a chance to tune in. At least they pulled the weekday afternoon show from the local fundagelical homophobe they had on last year.

in NYC on September 1, 2001. We protested, but it was useless. The station is the masthead of ESPN-Sports radio network.

18. No.
I used to tune in to Guy James when he was on Saturday afternoons. Other than that, I've never listened to any talk radio other than NPR; it's on when I'm in the car.

I have also not watched a television talk show since 2000, when I divorced. My ex watched Leno every night. That's the only talk/variety tv show I've ever watched.

I also haven't watched any tv news since 2000, same reason. Except for about 5 minutes on 9/22/01, when one of my sons called and demanded that I turn the tv on. I did, watched for 5 minutes, and haven't watched tv news since.

Somehow, I still manage to stay informed.

19. Ours was pulled by clearchannel last year
Good luck with your fight, but clearchannel could give a fuck what it's listeners want. They are still in the process of being sold for all I know. And having any liberal stations must be a liability.
I must now stream on the internet so long as that is still possible.

20. $$$
They care about one thing: money. And if they can make more with some predictable sports format, they will. You mean nothing to them, and you only would if there were enough of you to support these progressive formats, which for the most part, are struggling.

33. You are actually correct
I don't think this is a political decision by Clear Channel. First off, programming decisions at CC are made at the local level.

Second, if it were all about politics, Clear Channel wouldn't have done progressive talk in the first place. Basically, progressive talk was a way for Clear Channel to do something with some very small, stale AM signals in various markets. Seeing that there was really nothing else they could do with yet another conservotalk format, they decided to do a different kind of talk. Some stations did well with it (such as KLSD), while others didn't.

But the problem is, these companies have very itchy trigger fingers. They have rather unrealistic expectations for the most part, as they seem to expect a little 1000 watt AM station that nobody knows about to be a top 10 station. That could have worked in 1972, but the small AMs aren't ever going to reach those heights again. Most people don't listen to AM anymore. Nonetheless, they're still doing the two year format rotations on these facilities. Liberal talk is reaching that point on many stations. And the current format du jour is sports, which they have finally realized how to sell, ratings success or not. How do they do it? They sell it to advertisers (who have way, way more pull than the listeners) as a very narrow demographic buy. Namely, if you want to target male listeners who love sports, what better place than a sports talk station?

Hey, I'm a sports talk fan, but how does any station expect to make money being the #3 sports station in a given market? That's just lunacy. And advertisers will catch on eventually, as they realize that nobody is really listening to that canned feed of Sporting News Radio.

But not to worry. In two years or so, all these AM stations will be dumping sports for something else.

27. Yup, we fought that crap here in Madison, WI
Huge, huge petition drive. Many LTTEs. Lots of people contacting advertisers and making sure they knew how much we appreciated them supporting the Mic (our only liberal talk station). It's owned by Clear Channel and they wanted to turn it into a high school sports channel because they thought that would get more traffic.

It worked. Post on the WI forum and see if anyone else remembers what we did to stop it.

Good luck!!

29. Yes. CONTACT these folks...everyone (Esp. Mike Malloy fans)
We need to save this station.

You have NO idea how red San Diego is. We get Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura, and the like from both KOGO (AM 600, San Diego) AND KFI (AM 640, Los Angeles.) There are fundementalist stations up and down the dial. The ONLY relief was KLSD and now that is going. It's really upsetting.

KLSD, by the way, is one of the few liberal stations that kept Mike Malloy on at night, even after Air America canned him. They pipe in the Nova M broadcast.

PLEASE, PLEASE, SAVE THIS STATION.
