San Diego's AAR Station KLSD, Turning to ALL SPORT! Unless we stop them!
Not a rumor, a done deal according to my friend at AAR.

We have to mobilize and fast. I suggest we go to KLSD on Monday morning and at least try to get some sort of phone tree or email tree going. You can call if you want, but Cliff is on vacation.

Each and every one of you needs to DO THIS. You need to drag out family members, friends and neighbors. This is more than just losing our friends at KLSD, this is about losing our community. This is about disrupting the 2008 election. Get GOTV people and dem clubs, everyone you can think of.

We need to call Ed Schultz , Randi Rhoads, Thom Hartman and Mike Malloy and get their listeners to join us. (many listen during the day and not in the AM) so it is a way to reach out to them.

This should go ut to ALL lists, yes ALL of them and fast. Monday morning at KLSD /ClearChannel. We need to have a critical mass there. Say starting at 7:30 AM till 9:30 AM?

Try to confirm by Friday at the latest. We will of course follow up with calls to GM and such but a show of bodies is imperative.

They saved their station in Phoenix but lost it in Dallas.

It was a little light in San Diego which is now being extinguished.

Please help.

12. Maybe we can threaten to challenge Clear Channel's licenses too...
I think that given that they also own some stations in nearby Tijuana, that they actually have MORE than what one would normally have for a set of stations in one metro, since some of them are over the border. Don't know if there's any legal wrangling we can do, but if we get a smart lawyer at work, perhaps we can threaten to challenge them on having too many stations in this market, and maybe the corrective action would be to *sell* KLSD to someone else. I'd really like to have them owned by someone like Nova M anyway, where we could get more true progressive ownership and not have Corky McMillan ads running with it, that to me I find pretty insulting, given McMillan's reputations of being about the biggest enemy of getting Democratic candidates elected around here with all of his campaign donations to various Republicans around here, and hiring Duncan Hunter's bro as the VP of his developer's firm here.

13. Here's an article on how the FCC forced Clear Channel to sell some of their stations here!
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 04:58 PM by calipendence
From the Union Tribune in 2005! I don't know if they're still over limit here, but it would be worth checking out. If they are, then I think a nice petition to the FCC to force them to sell KLSD would be in order! And hopefully get someone like Nova M or the like to buy it up!

Spanish firm buys operating rights for 690 AM, heard from Baja to L.A.

By Hiram Soto

STAFF WRITERS

April 27, 2005

In an effort to expand its media empire in the Americas, Spanish media conglomerate Grupo Prisa has struck a $28 million deal with Clear Channel Communications for the rights to operate XTRA/AM 690.

...

Agreements such as the one Clear Channel has with Xetra Clear Channel enable a company to legally operate more stations in San Diego than is allowed under Federal Communications Commission ownership limits.

Under federal ownership laws, one company may own up to eight stations in a market, with no more than five stations per band. But because leases of foreign-owned signals do not count toward the limits, Clear Channel has de facto ownership of an additional four stations that broadcast to the San Diego market.

That has given Clear Channel an estimated 45 percent market share in San Diego, far surpassing that of its closest rival, Jefferson-Pilot Communications.

Under FCC rule changes that take effect this year, the lease of foreign-owned stations will count toward ownership – meaning Clear Channel will find itself with four too many stations on its hands.

The company has been in negotiations with buyers for its over-limit properties for several months, and the 690 AM deal is the first to go through.

21. They never owned any stations in Baja
The Mexican government forbids foreign ownership of media properties. However, they did run a few via a local marketing agreement (LMA). The FCC closed this loophole a few years back and CC had to pull out of running the Mexican properties.

22. Yes, you're right. But they did have control over them through their "lease" or whatever...
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 07:12 PM by calipendence
I guess the question is, did they fully pull out of all of these Mexican stations completely, or are they still on the hook to comply. The article here from 2005 sounded like they'd only sold off one of their "control" of one of them. If they are still not in compliance, in terms of getting rid of their Mexican "properties", perhaps that could still be a vulnerability to them. They either would need to get someone to buy up the Mexican station quickly to comply with FCC rules (if we challenged them to enforce these perhaps), or perhaps we could force them to sell off KLSD to comply to a willing buyer (if there are none for their remaining "Mexican" properties.

If they've successfully divested all of these Mexican stations, then this is probably a non-issue then.

17. Who are the advertisers on AAR?
Contacting the advertisers may be more effective. They are the only ones a station will actually listen to. However, if the ratings aren't there, then it's gone.

19. One of the advertisers on KLSD is Corky McMillin
Edited on Wed Aug-22-07 06:33 PM by calipendence
Every once in a while you'll hear an ad for McMillin real estate. There's also one for Corky's Pest Control, but I think that's a different Corky.

This article, as well as looking at the biggest campaign donors to the likes of Jerry Sanders and the mayors before him, give you an idea of where his politics lie.

http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20070303/news_lz1n3mcmillin.html

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he might be one of the reasons that KLSD is trying to switch to sports genre. Perhaps he figured if KLSD wasn't working hard on its ad sales, that he'd be an "easy sale" early on, and then later when they relied upon him for their bucks, he says, "I think you would do better if you switched the format. That way I'd get more customers and you'd get more money for ads!" Wouldn't put it past him! He's corrupted our local politics here in many other ways!

20. I got an email from the local PDA chapter this afternoon. I will be
devastated if this happens; I listen all day long.

According to Ed Schultz, he is beating every one else in the noon-3pm time slot in the San Diego market. This makes no sense.
