Tell me I'm wrong. Please tell me I'm wrong.
I was out all day. Some of the time I listened to the radio (AAR and our local allnewzradio station). Some of the time I was able to just sort of ruminate. A good deal of my rumination seems to involve politics.

Here's where I want to be seen as wrong .......

The Junta has been thumbing their noses at us for six long years. And for six long years, small victories aside, they've prevailed. Of late, it has to do with subpoenas. Those same subpoenas we all just **knew** were vital as we worked our asses off in the 06 cycle.

So we won the 06 cycle. We won it better than most of us dared to hope and better than the prognosticators prognosticated.

The electorate was angry and they wanted our side to fix things.

So we held hearings.

And we subpoenaed.

And the Junta laughed at us. They thumbed their noses at us. They laughed at the suggestion that anyone would prosecute their blowing off of our subpoenas. We have left, now, but two strategies. Inherent contempt or impeachment.

I want impeachment. But that doesn't mean much, it seems. I fear it isn't going to happen. So, that's one place you can tell me I'm wrong.

Then there's the inherent contempt thing. That's even more remote, it seems to me. First off, how do they explain it to the masses? I think its just too esoteric a process and the country is too pissed off to listen. I fear the 'throw them all out' mentality will take over and we'll lose in the end.

So the second 'tell me I'm wrong' thing is about the winning. I think they will. I don't think our side will win anything, really. I don't think the war will end. I don't think they'll ever be held accountable for anything. I don't think they'll stop spying on us. I don't think a damned thing will change until after the 08 cycle.

If then.

Tell me I'm wrong. Please tell me I'm wrong.

1. Our only hope
is for the Congressional Dems to undergo an epiphany and step up and impeach these criminals.

Short of that we lose. We lose in all of the ways you describe and more. And we lose in 08, Orwellian suggestions to the contrary notwithstanding. This is the most likely outcome. Sad times in America.

2. sadly, I don't think you are wrong. one point-- I don't want impeachment--to me, that is nothing
more than a slap on the wrist for these murderous, lying, thieving thugs. I want each and every member of this maladministration to be hauled before the ICC, found guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity, and be made to spend the rest of their worthless, misbegotten, hate-filled, useless lives in prison, where, 24/7, at completely random intervals, they are treated to the sights and sounds of the dead, dying and wounded in afghanistan, iraq, and our gulf states.

5. Sorry but I think you are right
I also am not convinced anything will change after the 08 election. I am not even convinced the Dems will win in 08. Not at the rate they are going.

12. My only hope at this point
Is that investigations will continue after * leaves office. At that point (in my fantasies), we'll have a Dem President and competent people in government -- in all departments, but especially in the DOJ and in any new judicial appointments.

If that should happen, maybe something will finally happen as far as investigations go. The DOJ will enforce subpenas. People will finally be compelled to testify. And if someone is convicted of something, the President won't commute their sentences. They'll do real time.

I also hope that hearings will be held in things that even Bushbots care about...namely, where the hell have all their tax dollars gone? Who Effed up rebuilding Iraq? How much did Halliburton rip us off for? Why is the price of gas so high?

13. You are not wrong, sad to say...
And I am very worried about 08... Dubya's already said he will NOT remove the troops on his watch, so whomever gets the Oval Office is in for one HELL of a cleanup job!

14. It's like poker
they will stall until forever by not agreeing to any requests. They will stand on their denials forever because they have seen the Dems fold every time.

The Dems just need to stand up and actually fight. That is the only thing that will stop this. They MUST get the American people behind them - not just fill out the bureaucratic forms.

Fascists do not care "what the people think" anyway. These people have rationalized torture, extraordinary rendition, violation of the Constitution etc. They will stand forever on their arrogance.
