Its owner, whackjob Sheldon Adelson, is bankrolling these pathetic Freedom Watch ads..... :argh:

Sheldon Adelson
From SourceWatch

Sheldon Gray Adelson ranked #6 of the world's billionaires in 2007, with an estimated net worth in excess of $26.5 billion. In 2006, Adelson ranked #3 in the Forbes 400 richest Americans, with an estimated net worth in excess of $20.5 billion.

In the Newsmeat Hall of Fame of political contributors, between 1984 and June 2007, Adelson has contributed nearly a million dollars, $791,563 to Republican candidates, $165,069 to Democratic candidates, and $37,000 to special interests.

In the 2008 election cycle, Adelson has already contributed $28,500 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, $4,600 each to Nevada Republican candidates Rep. Jon Porter and Rep. Dean Heller; $4,600 to Virginia Repubican Rep. Eric Cantor; and $2,300 to North Carolina Republican Rep. Virginia Foxx.

Adelson is one of several prominent conservatives funding Freedom's Watch, a new White House front group which on August 22, 2007, began "a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign to urge members of Congress who may be wavering in their support for the war in Iraq not to 'cut and run'."

Freedom Watch's ad buys target both Porter and Heller in Nevada—to the tune of $202,110.

A Boston native, Adelson is the CEO of Las Vegas Sands. On August 17, 2007, the Associated Press reported that William P. Weidner, President/COO/Director of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, a Las Vegas, Nevada, resort and casino and another Freedom's Watch supporter, said that Adelson, who "keeps a home in Massachusetts and pays taxes in the state," had been lobbying local officials "to legalize casino gambling" in Massachusetts.

Controversy
"He's the third richest person in the U.S., worth $20.5 billion, with a rags-to-riches story: the son of a Boston cabdriver, Adelson inaugurated the Comdex computer trade show, and then went into tourism, real estate, and casinos. He is CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corp., which operates the Venetian Casino Resort and the Sands Expo and Convention Center. Adelson is a major contributor to Jewish and Israeli causes, and to the GOP. This series of ads isn't his only propagandistic foray: the Vegas casino king has also gone into the newspaper business – in Israel. Yisrael Hayom is a new daily paper closely tied to the ultra-nationalist wing of the Likud party, and Benjamin Netanyahu's political aspirations. It was recently launched with a massive free mailing to hundreds of thousands, and has attracted considerable attention," Justin Raimondo wrote August 24, 2007, at Antiwar.com.

3. I haven't been in several years, but my last stay was at The Mirage, which I loved....
I don't know much about the MGM-Mirage Corp.'s political contributions, tho.

6. I heard on NPR last night that the MGM-Mirage hotels will be bought by...
Are you ready???

Dubai.

The report said that Dubai is so flush with cash (petro-dollars) that they want to diversify and accumulate "entertainment properties" and the like.

I can't wait until they buy Branson, Missouri.

That would rule.

12. Definitely Green Valley Ranch. If not there, then you get treated
very well at the Luxor.

4. Why is Freedom Watch targeting the conservative states?
Do they really think Ben Nelson is a "cut-and-runner"? I think not. Rallying the base, methinks.

5. his supposed "rags to riches" story seems highly questionable
he suddenly went from nothing to real estate, casions, and tourism? Bankrolled by who?

I am guessing the tourism and real estate parts involved a lot of fraud and/or illegal activity.

10. It's not. He is actually a real life self made man.
And, he is extremely philanthropic. Therefore, I am in complete disagreement with the OP.

11. He is astonishingly philanthropic and sometimes that transcends politics.
He and his wife, Miriam, have five charitable giving entities including some in Tel Aviv.

I know a great deal about this man having met him and worked with him. We don't agree politically, although in the past he has given tremendous support to democratic candidates, but he has been incredibly generous to other causes.

15. Gross. That's where I stayed this spring,
on my first visit to Las Vegas! :puke:

My boyfriend was invited to stay for free at the Venetian because he's such a high roller and spent so much money the last time he was there. He needs to see this article before he gets a spanking!:spank:

The Venetian has copycat Michaelangelo ceilings....so close to the real thing, some people would get offended at the blasphemy. I wasn't offended then, but I am now, now that I know who the owner is.
:puke: :puke: :puke:

Oh yeah, and the maid service was lousy! Now that I've read this, I'm convinced the maids were overworked and underpaid. (My boyfriend tipped anyway, hoping they'd give us extra chocolates on the pillows, LOL.)

18. OK, so are any of the casino corporations owned by Democrat
supporters? This post is only half the info we need. I also notice one reply defending this guy as a true philanthropist. I try not to give money to rw wackjobs, but don't see how I can make a determination here. Course, I can't afford the Venetian anyway. How does the Tropicana rate in this scheme?
