Call to seek explanation from American authorities

U.K. soldiers blame American pilot
Washington promises investigation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LONDON: British-U.S. relations, already under pressure following American criticism of Britain’s planned gradual withdrawal from Iraq, took another hit on Saturday after three British soldiers were killed in Afghanistan in a “friendly fire” involving U.S. bomber jets.

This happened when two U.S. Air Force fighter planes called in by a British unit, under attack from Taliban militants in Helmund province, instead of bombing the Taliban positions mistakenly dropped bombs on their British allies, killing three.

The incident, latest in a series of “friendly fire” attacks on British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, provoked anger here prompting calls for the Government to seek an explanation from American authorities.

British soldiers on the ground were reported as saying that their tanks were clearly visible and criticised the American pilot involved in the incident for failing to recognise them.

5. That is not what BBC's news said on my PBS last night
Edited on Sat Aug-25-07 06:31 PM by Robbien
BBCs talking news head presented the story as Brits taking a "these things happen" attitude. What tools. (edit: Just to be clear. tools meaning the BBC, not the Brits)

6. Well, they knew the job was dangerous when they took it. As individuals and a country.
And I 've no doubt the US will apologize.

7. They didn't know how screwed up
the US military command is and how rotten our military intelligence is. They didn't know that the big danger would be to watch out for being killed willy nilly by their supposed ally.

Sure the US will apologize. Just like we did when we bombed the heck out of the Canadians in Afghanistan several years ago. I hear they are still waiting.
