Is "perverted" behavior a symptom of a repressed society?
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 08:12 PM by Skip Intro
Let's say you're a, oh, flower.

Let's say you have an urge, an undeniable urge, to grow from a seedling into a beautiful, magnificent thing of beauty - unique and incomparable, and breathtaking in the fullness of who and what you are. You are 100% what you were meant to be, what you've longed to be, what you ARE, genuine and sincere and spectacular.

Then let's say, as you strive to blossom into your glorious, full being, you encounter such hostility, such negativism, such authoritative shame, such bashing - falling like boulders upon your fragile effort to just be.

You're a kid. The world is bright and beautiful. Magical. No boundaries such that break your spirit. What a wondrous place in which you live, and how wondrous you must be to be here. Sometimes its hard to stop smiling.

Time passes and you start to realize you're not the same as others. You're not the same as those on tv. YOu're not the same as your parents, or their Friends, or yours. In fact, over time, you learn the things you feel, strongly, are viewed by many around you as bad, horrid, enough to turn off your family's love and invite ridicule from strangers. Potential friends become potential threats to avoid. Even God hates you. SO much so fast. Why? What do you do?

You hide yourself. YOu stuff yourself as far back into your psyche as you can, and you pretend to be something else. Shattering harm is done, ongoing and cumulative. Not healthy. And you continue to grow. No one must find out.

And so you spend much of your time, much of your energy, much of your life force, creating and maintaining a false persona - must avoid the hellish judgment and onslaught of shame should you be found out. Yet who you are is still there. Still kicking. And still coming to the surface from time to time. In twisted ways, the only ways left available.

I'm not so pissed at a person who expresses urges in unconventional ways, as long as all involved are adults and all actions are consensual and not in violations of others' rights, so much as I am saddened by a society who's prejudices and intolerances unfairly cripple the natural development of any of its members.

Did that make any sense?

1. Yeah
If Senator Craig was comfortable with his sexuality he wouldn't be trying to fellate strangers in a public restroom.

3. Ya think?
Our society sucks.

My only consolation is that Republicans suck even more than society at large.

4. Yes, absolutely. The republicans in charge could give a damn about perversions.
That's why they keep commiting them. What they really want to do is repress and disempower the individual through shame. They want you to cultivate that hidden persona, they want you to live a lie, because that's the kind of people they NEED to lie to the public on a regular basis while screwing them. They need a repressed secretive society to continue their way of life; control through shame and deception.

5. I don't really care what causes people to want to have sex in public
restrooms. If they're going to do those sorts of behaviors, there should be legal consequences.

13. You're probably right, however, about the repression
although, maybe not. It could be fetishism. I've known plenty of people whose sexuality (regardless of orientation) was extremely repressed by their upbringings or by society, etc. and 99% of them did not engage in cotaging. On the other hand, I've known a few people who were really turned on by the idea of dirty sex with strangers in public bathrooms because it was dirty sex with strangers. So perhaps it's more of a fetish than anything else.

7. When you repress normal behavior, you lose the distinction between it and perversion...
...lumping them together in the same category. Then, breaking a taboo is breaking a taboo.

8. I'm still trying to imagine myself as a flower.
Am I a sentient flower or a regular flower?

14. OK, is punishing pedophiles wrong?
If by perverts, I think most folks would agree that those who prey upon kids for their sexual jollies could be defined as such in our society.
Would punishing those in that minority be prima facie evidence that society itself is backwards and wrong and repressive?
