Teen killed in shooting at back-to-school party
There is just no putting the toothpaste back in the tube, is there? "Some went to their cars and got handguns." Just teenaged. And another light is snuffed out.

======

A 17-year-old girl who apparently tried to turn away from a gunfight died when an errant bullet struck her in the back of her head this morning, Detroit police said.

The shooting was at a banquet hall on Sherwood on the city’s east side at about 12:30 a.m., Detroit Spokeswoman Yvette Walker said. A mother had thrown a party for her high school-aged son there when a group of teens allegedly got into a fight.

The teens were thrown out, but the fight continued. Some involved went to their cars and got handguns, Walker said. Both sides allegedly started firing.

“Police retrieved at least 25 shell casings from three different weapons,” Walker said.

1. Dammit, it's dangerous being a teen these days.
Dammit dammit dammit. This makes me cry.

I never knew you, I never will know you, but dammit, as a teenage girl who has never loved, never seen the world... I'm sorry.

2. Horrible
what happened to the "good old" thrashing? Why do kids have to pull guns for Christ's sake when they get into fights? And why do they have guns in the first place?????

3. Clearly, the "gun grabbers" have been selling all the guns they grabbed
to 'murcas youth.:sarcasm:

Seriously folks, hand waving arguments for guns laws DON'T WORK.

5. What gun law, past, present, or future could have prevented this?

7. Make all handguns illegal
Six months for the first violation..

Two years for the next.

I don't advocate that at all, but it would sure cut down on gun violence.

8. It's ALREADY ILLEGAL for teenagers to have handguns in MI
From Michigan State Law:

"a person shall not purchase, carry, or transport a pistol in this state without
first having obtained a license for the pistol"

Michigan prohibits the purchase of a handgun by any person under age 21 (Section 28.422(3)(b))

Plus:

"You may be criminally and civilly liable for any harm caused by a person less than 18 years of age who lawfully gains unsupervised access to your firearm if unlawfully stored." Section 28.435(6).

9. If only there'd been *MORE* guns, everything would have turned out just ducky!
(Or so say certain elements of our society.)

12. Guns for everyone I say. Arm the infants and get fitted with kevlar.
It is the only answer.

11. I blame schools.
If school wasn't coming back in session, this wouldn't have happened.

Let's stop schools so this will never happen again.

13. Last weeks the First 48 episode followed a case of a 14 yr old
being murdered as it turns out by some sixteen year olds. He was shot and thrown in the trash. Whats even worse the kid's mother had died from Aids complications when he was seven and didn't really seem to have any one caring about him, not even his father.

and last month the First 48 followed a story where this 16 year old kid killed another teenager after robbing him on a freaking bicycle. The kid that was murdered was a decent young man. He died in his fathers arms too, so damn senseless.

15. It's not just guns, either....
A former student of mine, now in high school, was hazed at a party recently.
A mixture of bleach and other chemicals was thrown into his eyes, partially
blinding him for a few days.

There are some sick, sick young folks out there. Some fine young folks out
there too, to be sure.
