Taking another swing at impeachment

By Christian Avard | Vermont Guardian

Posted February 9, 2007

Uncle Sam has a task for Vermonters: He wants you to impeach the president. That’s the message that dozens of activists in Vermont are bringing to Town Meeting Day around the state.

“We are in a very dangerous moment in this country, and I think people don’t realize how close we are to losing our constitutional form of government and our rights enshrined in the Bill of Rights,” said David Lindorff, co-author of The Case for Impeachment, who spoke recently in Windham County and believes the issue of impeachment will be a large issue this year if more Vermont towns pass the resolution. “If you get even close to 100 towns, that’s huge, and the Legislature passing it would have a constitutional significance, a page-one story nationwide.”

Last year, seven Vermont towns passed a version of the impeachment resolution and the result was the “shot heard ‘round the world.”

Vermont’s lone member of the U.S. House — Rep. Peter Welch, D-VT — believes accountability is necessary and that our main focus should remain on bringing U.S. troops home: “As a new member of the House committee charged with oversight of the executive branch, I will be working in Congress to hold the president accountable for the faulty intelligence leading up to the war as well as its mismanagement. I believe these issues must be thoroughly investigated and they should follow the facts,” said Welch. “I also strongly believe that Congress needs to look forward, focusing our efforts on changing the direction of the country, most importantly, ending the war and ensuring the safe and responsible return of our troops as soon as possible.”

Regardless of where Vermont leaders stand, Pillsbury holds out hope that constituents will respond to the impeachment bill. “Let me tell you, for somebody who’s spent seven years in the Legislature, people may not think their voices are heard but enough are calling, and they’re heard. Believe me.”

2. “shot heard ‘round the world.”
That's a bit of a rosy view. More like a shot heard round the blogoshere.

5. Damn! Vermont provides us with so much per capita leadership these days!

They gave us Bernie Sanders as the longest standing independent congressman.
They gave us Bernie Sanders as the first socialist senator.
They've given us Patrick Leahy, who lead opposition against the Telecommunications Act.
They gave us Howard Dean, who though was thwarted from the presidency, now leads the DNC's 50 state strategy that won us back the congress!
They gave us Thom Hartman, though moving to Oregon (where I may move to as the "Vermont" of the west coast sometime soon), has been one of the best progressive talk show voices out there!

And now, perhaps they'll lead the way in helping us get rid of these bastards in the executive branch!

Such a great state with a small population! If I were to move to the east coast, that's where I'd want to live!

6. We welcome you with open arms.
Both kinds of course. Afterall, Dean did have an A rating from the NRA here. ;) But they only hunt game with the arms here.

If impeachment doesn't work, we'll be seceding to form a Republic like we used to be. The People's Republic of Vermont.

If Thomas Naylor has his way, you might need a passport to enter Vermont from south of the border. From Massachusetts, that is.

Naylor is a bigwig in the local secessionist movement: Vermont seceding from the United States.

Working to establish the Second Vermont Republic is a career change for Naylor, 70, of Charlotte. He’s a retired economics professor from Duke.

Forty years ago, Naylor wrote a textbook on using computer models to make assessments about the economy, "Computer Simulation Techniques." It was the first of its kind, he says.

"Now I don’t touch computers," Naylor said.

These days, Naylor is looking back — 230 years, to Vermont's first stint as a republic — not ahead.

March 7 ~ The Great Debate: Is it Time for a Second Vermont Republic? UVM Professor Frank Bryan and former Deputy Secretary of State Paul Gillies debate whether the time has come for a Second Republic of Vermont. Governor Jim Douglas has been invited to moderate this good-spirited debate. Location: UVM Campus Center Theater

7. The name I have here is inspired by postulating a California secession too!
Though I think Ahnuld winning last year makes that a little less practical for the moment. Might have to recall his ass first! On the other hand, we need to get some fundamental changes happening in Washington soon before I throw out the idea of California secession. We DO need impeachment!

9. Will you settle for moving up the CA primary?
That ought to allow for more progressive candidates. For example, Dean may have won in 2004 if California and Texas were up front, or New York even. But he was blown out at Iowa. My hopes this time are for the California primary to move up front and for Gore to enter the race. :)

10. Don't forget James Jeffords!
The only Republican I ever considered voting for. He threw the Senate back into Democratic hands by declaring himself an independent and caucusing with the Democrats in 2001. Unfortunately, the Democrats tried to play nice, and squandered the opportunity, but that's not his fault.

8. Rep. Peter Welch's statement is infuriating bullshit!
We will NEVER stop the war with Bush and Cheney in office. And the next president will CONTINUE the war if they are not removed.

We CANNOT restore Constitutional government unless Congress punishes UNconstitutional government--unjust, illegal, heinous war, lying to the American people on every war issue before and during the war, 600,000 people slaughtered for nothing, torturing prisoners, massive war profiteer thievery, domestic spying, presidential "signing statements" by which Bush exempts himself and his junta from the law, and every manner of egregious tyranny has been committed, and continues to be committed. If these crimes are not punished, the Constitution is gone. GONE!

We cannot restore democracy in this county without restoring TRANSPARENT elections! As the result of the corruption in the Anthrax Congress, led by its chief crooks, Tom Delay and Bob Ney (abetted by corporatist 'Democrat' Christopher Dodd, and by the silence if not collusion of Terry McAuliffe)--all our votes are now being "counted" by rightwing Bushite electronic voting corporations, using "TRADE SECRET," PROPRIETARY programming code, with virtually no audit/recount controls--a Stalinist voting system, if there ever was one. As a consequence, we have a fascist coup in the White House, which is not only escalating a war that 56% of the American people opposed from the beginning, and that 74% of the American oppose now, they are spoiling for war with an ADDITIONAL Mideast country that has done nothing whatever to deserve it--and with EIGHTY-FOUR PERCENT of the American people opposed to any U.S. participation in a widened Mideast war. Are these polling numbers reflected in the composition of Congress? NO! So, Congress is ALSO being influenced by the 5% to 10% "thumb on the scales" for Bushites, warmongers and corporatists, that these Bushite corporations, with their secret voting counting formulas, are weighing against the will of the people. The people outvoted their machines in some cases, and were unable to in others.

This cautious, namby-pamby drivel that I keep hearing from many of the Democrats--"I also strongly believe that Congress needs to look forward, focusing our efforts on changing the direction of the country..." (Rep. Welch)--drives me nuts. We've suffered a FASCIST COUP, Rep. Welch! WAKE UP!

The Constitution and our democracy are hanging in the balance. Are game-players like this going to save them? NO! With attitudes like this, we are going to suffer decades of fascist rule before we get our country back, and by then, it is going to be a tattered ruin.

Clearly, we have to save our democracy ourselves--appropriately enough, I suppose. And we can start by pressuring local/state election officials and legislators DEMANDING that they restore 100% TRANSPARENT elections NOW. We have a chance at the local level. There is no chance that this Congress is going to change the way THEY were elected. The proposals in Congress are crap. We have to do it ourselves!
