Sold into Slavery: The Boy with the Haunting Eyes (The Little Boy Oprah Couldn't Forget )
Sold into Slavery: The Boy with the Haunting Eyes

In October 2006, Oprah was reading The New York Times when she saw a picture of a 6-year-old child slave named Mark. For months, she was haunted by the look in Mark's eyes, so Oprah decided to send Oprah Show correspondent Lisa Ling on a 7,000-mile journey to Ghana to find him.

When Lisa first got the assignment, she was shocked to learn the statistics about child slavery in the West African country —which is roughly the size of Oregon. It is estimated that one in every four children in Ghana work as child laborers, Lisa says.

1. I watched most of the show but, never got to see the segment
about this little boy. What happened with him? And, how does the women from Missouri figure in?

3. *** HOW YOU CAN HELP ***
Adopt a Trafficked Child in Ghana

Key Objectives

This project enables an individual or group of individuals to support a trafficked child in Ghana, one of 587 children rescued by IOM from the fishing villages of Yeji where they were forced to work under hazardous conditions.

For a minimum of USD 20 per month for at least one year, a sponsor could support a specific child based on his or her profile. Such sponsorship would enable IOM and its governmental and non-governmental partners to provide assistance to each selected child on a continuous basis, which would protect the child from being re-trafficked.

4. I just did a little bit of math
to support all 587 children for a year requires a total of $140,880. First I was thinking that Oprah, with her net worth of 40 billion, could easily sponsor all of them. Then I figured too that if 20,000 DUers each pitched in $7 that would also support the entire group for a year. Which is really amazing. The hard part, though, is getting 20,000 people to go along.
