GM agrees to edit Super Bowl robot ad

By DAVID RUNK

DETROIT

General Motors Corp. said Friday it has agreed to edit a Super Bowl commercial that drew criticism from a suicide prevention group for showing a quality-obsessed robot jumping off a bridge in a dream sequence after messing up on the job.

The world's largest automaker previously said it had no plans to change the spot, which is making the rounds online and is featured on the company's Web site. The ad made its broadcast debut during Sunday's NFL championship telecast.

But GM spokesman John M. McDonald said the company agreed to change the ad after discussing concerns about it with the New York-based American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The ad is expected to air again after the changes are made, but a date hasn't been set, McDonald said. He declined to describe what would be changed.....

3. This Is So Freaking Hysterically Sad
GM is editing it because of complaints by people running suicide hotlines, never mind that the ad mocks every skilled worker in the country.

4. It may be the wrong reason, but I think it's the right thing
But, yeah, I agree that their contempt for workers is not being addressed at all

5. It better end with the robot forming a union
or driving off into the sunset with "take this job and shove it" playing on the radio, or killing CEOs.

6. When I saw the ad I thought of the workers who faced unemployment.
At least they care about a mythical robot.

9. Opponents should make their own ad, with the robots donning themselves
with solar cells, going out and finding the carcasses of the Electric Car, EV1, digging it up out of its grave, putting it back in working order and driving off to a solar energy convention somewhere over the horizon.

12. That idea I like!
If anyone sets up a contest for anti-GM ads, be sure to enter your idea-its a winner!

10. I kind of wish they would keep airing it
because I think it highlights the way they treat their workers. But if people more knowledgeable than I (that is, the suicide prevention group)think that it would have a potential negative effect then they probably know what they're talking about and I'm glad it's not going to be shown anymore.
