BAGHDAD (AP) - Iraq's beleaguered prime minister lashed out Sunday at his U.S. critics, saying they don't appreciate the country's achievements and fail to understand how difficult it is to rebuild after decades of war and dictatorship.
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said some of the criticism from Washington in advance of this month's progress reports has been counterproductive.
''Such statements sometimes cross the limits and send signals to terrorists luring them into thinking that the security situation in the country is not good,'' al-Maliki told reporters without offering a specific example.
He said U.S. critics may not know ''the size of the destruction that Iraq passed through'' and do not appreciate ''the big role of the Iraqi government and its achievements, such as stopping the civil and sectarian war.''

It's goddamn arrogant of him to assume that we should care at all about propping up his regime.
The presence and actual functioning of the Maliki government isn't nearly enough to provide ANY wedge against ANY threatening force which may develop in Iraq. All his regime is good for is providing cover for the U.S. military assault on any Iraqi who would resist Bush's advance on their territory.
No matter what he manages to accomplish legislatively in Iraq, Maliki's efforts will remain obscured and marginalized by the ultimate, destructive aims of Bush and his escalation of force as long as our lame duck loser is allowed to continue -- as long as Maliki insists that our forces need to stay and refuses to pass legislation telling our military to leave. Maliki is as much an enemy to the future of Iraqis in his acquiessence to the occupation as Bush is in his persistence.
