This is fucking revolting.

That's where I went to high school, and it was a good place. Even during the turmoil of the last half of the 1960s, the school's administration (and believe me, the principal back then was about as conservative as they come) would NEVER have ceded their authority to the local police departments. Never.

What a disgraceful, cowardly knuckling-under to The Fear that the current administration uses as a weapon to turn this country into the United States of Soviet America.

Edited to replace the mile-long URL with the "tinyURL," and thanks for the help, guys.

tinyurl is your friend
It's hard to tell what story you're referencing in that huge URL.

5. So THAT's what the problem is. Can you do me a favor, and give me the
thirty-second tutorial on the "tinyURL" business? I've seen it, but am not sure how it works.

7. It's easy.
Copy the loooooong url and then go to http://tinyurl.com and paste it into the window they provide. Hit enter, and a new page appears with your Tiny URL.

14. I'd like to raise an objection to "tinyurl", I really don't like that method.
I've already posted the actual DU-designed method of formatting a text link below. You don't have to go off-site to do it.

My objection to "tinyurl" is that there is no way of seeing what site the link is to, unlike the DU method which clearly shows the original address of the site you are linking to when you pass your cursor over the text link.

In fact, I won't follow "tinyurl" links at all unless they are posted along with other information that identifies where the link is going.

When DU makes it so easy to format a text link, it seems silly to go offsite to get what you need.

20. Sometimes this site chokes on semi colons, so TinyURL comes
in handy at times like that.

23. I ran across a post here today that had a problem with
a semi colon. I know what to do, with my own posts, but other's may not.

11. Here is a quick tutorial on making text links:
Edited on Sun Sep-02-07 04:12 PM by scarletwoman
Which you can also find by by clicking on the "HTML
lookup table" that appears above the message window when
you compose a post.

Anyway, it is simplicity itself: type [link:(paste the link
from the address bar at the top of the page you are linking
to)|(type in your text here, such as the title of the piece)]

Again: Opening bracket '['with the word "link"
followed by a colon ':', followed by the url, followed by the
vertical bar '|', followed by the text such as the title of
the piece, followed by the closing bracket ']'. That's it.

IMPORTANT: When you paste in the URL you MUST strip off the
'http:' at the beginning or your text link will not work.

Your link should look like this:
[link:www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=post&forum=389&topic_id=1719581&mesg_id=1719622|Here
is a quick tutorial on making text links]

Just make sure you always strip off the "http:" part
and you'll be good to go!

13. Am I embarrassed much? Here I am, a guy who makes websites for a living,
and there's so much basic http-related stuff that I don't have a clue about.

PS: I'm utterly useless when it comes to forms and other cgi-type stuff as well.

Most people just never even notice the "HTML lookup table", but I've loved using it ever since I figured how easy it is. :D

Kids now have many more resources to defeat p-tests than in the old days.
And, I know of one school where one student saw 'em coming and sent text messages to his friends, who sent more.....
