Leahy says no hearings on AG until
they get the answers they want on warrentless wiretapping, rendition and torture, the fired U.S Attorneys, etc.

Interviewed this morning on VPR, Leahy said that until the know the extent of what Justice did on these matters, they can't hold meaningful hearings on a replacement for Gonzo.

3. and then bush will whine that there's no AG
because the dems won't play ball, the republics will whine because they can't have an "up/down" vote, (which if they did, they would probably fillibuster anyways)

meanwhile, the powder keeps drying on the tables they don't have

9. Does Bush care if he doesn't have an AG?
Isn't that just one less person to question what he's doing?

10. It's not like he can just not nominate someone
Clement isn't a recess appt; he's merely acting AG, so he can't put nominating someone off indefinitely. He has an obligation to nominate.

4. If you believe (as I do) that he is doing the right thing then contact his office and tell him
Edited on Tue Sep-04-07 07:34 AM by ThomWV
Because the surest way for him, or any Senator, to cave is for us to ignore it when he does the right thing.

I often contact Leahy as he's my Senator, but I haven't done so about this.

11. You may want to insert the words "confirmation" and "new" in strategic subject line locations.

18. I am no longer anxious.
My anxious correspondence with our "democrats" during the Clinton Impeachment disabused me of any notions that we have actual representaions in Congre$$.

15. or nothing,.
Leahy simply won't hold AG confirmation hearings. He may well not get the information he's seeking but he puts bushco in a tight spot. And aside from the kooky inherent contempt idea, what else beyond issuing subpoenas and contempt charges, can he do?

23. When?
They're back, and they don't have a recess for a while. If he didn't recess appoint when he had the chance, it's doubtful he'll do it. And if it appears that he will, then the Senate can hold pro forma sessions.

33. He has an acting atty general
I'm wondering if it's better for Bush to keep his stand-in that have to submit someone to confirmation. Leahy's been at this a lot longer than I have, and I respect him. But, I wonder if this is really the tack to take. Seems to me stronger to have confirmation hearings and pound on the subpenas then.
